very charming, openminded hosts. we didn't have reservation, came in low season and they changed their private plans to accommodate us. Best breakfast during our 3 weeks in Portugal. Homemade jam, yoghurt and fruits from the garden. House with a lot of history, antique furniture, you can feel that there's a lot of passion in everything. We had a great stay. Thank you very much

Actually, it was literally on the beaten path too. Ask your wonderful host Rita about the town's "lantern walk." But just make sure you wear good shoes if she invites you to join the town on that little excursion!

Fabulous stay; beautiful property. We will be back soon for sure. Creative types: ask about the "kitchen" !

My husband and I stayed at Casa do Terreiro do Poço for one night in April. We were quite happy with the accommodations and breakfast. What really made this place special for us was our host, Rita. She gave us great information about what to see and do in the area. Not only did Rita recommend a great, inexpensive local restaurant for dinner but she actually walked us there, introduced us to the owner and made sure we ordered the best dishes! We had the most fantastic Alentejo style tomato soup that night. We hope to have the chance to meet Joao the next time we return to Casa do Terreiro do Poço.

I stayed at Casa do Terreito do Poço with my family last summer. A very busy few months at work meant I was unable to write a review at the time, but over the past year I've found myself thinking (indeed, dreaming!) about this extraordinary place over and over again, and so thought I'd write one now.

Upon arrival you're immediately struck by two of the most distinctive features of the place:
1) the beautiful gardens, pool area and lounge, with their comfortable sofas for relaxation and snoozing, secluded spots surrounded by plants and flowers which are perfect for reading or chatting, and perfect combination of sun-soaked and shady seating areas. Even when other guests are present, you feel like you're in our own fairy-tale, secret garden.

2) The hospitality of João and Rita, who provide a warm welcome and are always happy to help with any needs you may have before, during and after your stay.

Breakfast is abundant and delicious, and there is often something new and different each day, meaning it's a treat to arrive each morning and find out what's on offer. Each house feels quite private and has its own distinctive decorating style - some are very classical and rustic, but others much more contemporary and cosmopolitan. If you have strong preferences, it may be worth telling João and Rita in advance.

Borba is fairly small, but does have picturesque streets and plazas and there are many other interesting villages and towns nearby.

This makes Casa do Terreiro do Poço the ideal hotel to stay in if you want to be somewhere that is distinctive and feels remote, verdant and allows you to relax and "turn off", but is bang in the middle of a small town, with restaurants and cafés on your doorstep. I cannot recommend it more highly!

We first visited and reviewed the Casa do Terreiro do Poço in September 2007 and have just returned from our fourth visit. We have always requested the same room, the Casa da Varanda,. After our first visit we e-mailed the owner to say that the bathroom mirror was too low and that the lighting in that room was poor. We got a response, on the same day, to tell us that the mirror had already been moved and that the electrician would change the light position the following week. That sort of attention to detail and willingness to listen is rare. Casa do Terreiro do Poço is the vision of the owners João and Rita and it is not only unique but also full of character. It is made up from a collection of old buildings, the rooms are all individual and the gardens could be described as wild or, perhaps, unkempt depending on your point of view. As another reviewer has noted, there is no onsite parking and the street immediately outside is extremely narrow. We have usually parked there without problems although the alternative would be to park a little further afield and walk a little. Borba is an old town and was laid out before the advent of cars. The Casa do Terreiro do Poço continues to evolve; last week we were shown four new rooms that are nearly ready to be put into use. We expect to continue to return to relax in the charming and friendly environment that João and Rita have created.

Room Tip: The Casa do Varanda is just one step up from ground level and it has its own terrace with a table and chairs, a settee and a couple of steamer chairs. Inside It is cool and shady - perfect for a summer stay - and just a few steps from the swimming pool area,
