Description: Join us on a magical journey of ethical eating ELL is an ethical eatery focusing on healthy, nutritious, fresh and local produce with origin and ethical sustainability as the guideline to creating culinary delights. We all know the saying: "You are what you eat" By supplying food that has been ethically sourced, ELL will encourage patrons to be aware of what they eat, how the food was cultivated, fed and treated as well as brought to the table to be consumed as culinary delights. We all love to eat, but in order to live life to the fullest, it is essential to create balance and to respect life in all it's forms. ELL is situated on the R320 en route from Hermanus to Caledon on the beautiful wine farm, Spookfontein in the upper Hemel-en Aarde Valley that produces wines of destinction, in character with the whole vision of an organic, ethically sustainable eatery. The magnificent modern and artistic cellar, designed by architect DJ Carr of Ghost Fountain Designs, with interior decor designed by his partner Wilna, situated on top of the mountain in-between the natural fynbos, overlooking the vineyards, boasts awe inspiring views over the valley, the Babylonstoren mountains and the sea. This must certainly be one of the best spots to enjoy the sun setting in the West towards Hangklip. The eatery offers a relaxed, inviting atmosphere and ambience to visitors and encourage patrons to join on the magical journey of ethical eating. ELL specializes in a combination of designer pizzas, salads & creative dishes with fresh local ingredients and most importantly, the focus on produce sourced with origin and ethical farming practices and sustainability in mind. Vegetarians and vegans will find a refreshing variety of dishes to suit their culinary requirements and meat eaters will be able to enjoy food that was sourced from farms certified in ensuring the animal's well being and utter respect for their lives.

I love the fact that the menu is small and focused. Ive tried most on there now and haven't been disappointed once. We normally have a few small plates. The seared Tuna is very good value and spectacular. I'm also a big fan of the Oxtail Ragu.

And then onto that view. Well you just cant get better. Add to that fact that you can buy top-class Spookfontein wines at Estate prices, there really isn't a better place for lunch and some wine in Hermanus.

Please don't be put off by a few small-minded reviews by diners complaining about small portions. I would say that the food is on the "fine dining" spectrum for SA; so expect well-presented and carefully thought out-dishes - not gut-busting Burgers and chips. If you're looking for Spur.... there is a lovely one in the shopping mall!

Touring along Hermanus Wine Route we stopped for lunch at Spookfontein. We found a good restaurant with a nice view from the hilltop in a peaceful setting. The menu offers something for every taste. Service was great and fast. Liked it a lot. Much more welcoming than Creation winery (sorry to say). Baie dankie!

This was the 3rd winery we visited that day and was by far the worst. Nothing wrong with their wines but the lunch was the worst meal we had in 18 days of being in the Cape Town area. The food was awful - runny watery corn soup, and greasy bland fish cakes. If we had not been guests we would have walked out.

We went to Spookfontein as a group of 12, not easy to serve and please. We were welcomed excellently and the waiter had to wait - until we had stopped talking - to take our orders. They did not appear to be long in coming. I enjoyed a beer from a boutique brewery that was expensive but good value. My wife and I both had the pork ramen - belly of pork with chillies and noodles. It was quite hot but not too bad for her. I found it excellent. Judging from the remarks round the table the others were well satisfied. We'll be back

We were a table of four persons for lunch.
We were warmly welcomed on arrival and showed to a table with the most magnificent
view of the Hemel and Aarde valley.
The service was good and friendly.
We all ordered different meals all of which was above average.
We have been on 3 previous occasions and we will return.
