Owner description: The Iziko South African Museum houses more than one and a half million specimens of scientific importance. The collections now range from fossils almost 700-million years old to insects and fish caught last week. There are also stone tools made by people 120 000 years ago, traditional clothes from the last century, and T-shirts printed yesterday. The Planetarium, which is housed in the South African Museum building, is a celestial theatre in the round, utilising the complex Minolta star machine and multiple projectors to transport the audience through the wonders of the universe. The ultimate in armchair travel.Inside the domed auditorium, we can recreate the night sky, so whatever the weather outside, the Planetarium sky is always clear, an extraordinary audio-visual experience for old and young.

Not expensive and great place to spend with the children. They can have fun and learn at the same time. Must do for children ...

This museum goes above and beyond to add excitement to the adventure of discovering the wonders of the wild and indigenous creatures that call Cape Town home.

The displays are all exhaustively researched and the information is imparted in interactive and engaging ways. You can learn about the Cape rats and how they contributed to diseases throughout the port-town's history. Or you can sit in a audio booth and listen to the mesmerizing whale songs as you stare down the length of an enormous blue whale skeleton.

Definitely a trip to do with kids and then again when you're an adult and have forgotten how awesome this place is.

A larger than first imagined space containing a museum of Africas natural history.

Everything from fossils to cave art.

Many permanent exhibits which cover 5 floors all very well exhibited and with good explanations.

Not very busy which is a surprise as it is such a reasonable cost to get in.

Again we left our visit too late in the day and ended up rushing around, but it was more than enough to see what a fantastic variation of exhibits on show, Rock Art, birds mammals of Africa, Dinosaurs, and sea life. I could not work out how to go around the museum, maybe just me, it seemed a little disjointed but still wonderful and very reasonably priced. Never made it to the observatory.
