This hotel is a converted prison so it is quite different. The room although adequate was very very small indeed. Our particular room had no view whatsoever but as we were basically just sleeping there it served it's purpose. It's in a great location only 5 mins walk from all the activities on the waterfront.
The staff were very friendly and well mannered, in fact they couldn't do enough for you. We were on a bed and breakfast package and the breakfasts were spot on.
We had one evening meal there after a tiring day sightseeing and it was beautiful and once again the barman and waiters were absolutely great.
I'd recommend this hotel if you want a friendly hotel in a great location, but if your looking for a room with space and a view then this isn't the hotel for you.

PHBWLCPT, General Manager at Protea Hotel Cape Town Waterfront Breakwater Lodge, responded to this reviewResponded 4 April 2018

Dear SunderlandPgj,

Thank you for taking the time to inform us of your stay at our Hotel.

Our hotel is unique in that it was once the old Breakwater Prison which dates back to 1859. The Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge comprises of 7 different room types, hence if you are not happy with the room allocated to you, you are most welcome to request an upgrade from our friendly Reception TEAM, and they will gladly assist you if availability allows. Location is vitally important when selecting a holiday destination, and we can confidently say that we have one of the best locations in Cape Town. We do have rooms with views, and it is advisable to request a room with a view when making your reservation, and again, if availability allows, we will gladly accommodate your request.

It is great to hear that you found our staff friendly and well mannered and enjoyed the service offered to you. We hope you enjoyed the superb views while having breakfast.

Thank you for your recommendation and we hope to welcome you back when you next visit our friendly city of Cape Town.

Yours in hospitality,
Colin Naiker,
General Manager

Very centrally located, across the street from the Waterfront. Close to public parking. Restaurant with excellent breakfast and dinner. Friendly service. Spa and well equipped gym. Save parking. Historical building.

This hotel doesn’t really hold up to the Marriott standards, but we knew this going in after reading many reviews. However, we had a short time in Cape Town, didn’t want to rent a car, and we used Marriott points.
There are two separate buildings, and one is intertwined with a graduate school.
Checking in was chaotic and we weren’t able to solicit any feedback about the city’s restaurants, highlights or available.
On the bright side, location is prime for visiting the very touristy V&A Waterfront. The room is clean and comfortable and overall we feel safe.

The hotel is perfectly located to explore Cape Town: a five minute walk to V&A Waterfront, a 10min drive to the city center and a 20min drive to Table Mountain. We enjoyed the stay, however the rooms were not particularly big or modern for the price range.

My husband and I like to "play tourist" in our own city. As a result, we chose the Breakwater as our venue for our anniversary as it is close to the stadium for the 7s Rugby we'd be attending and the V&A Waterfront. It didn't prove to be the best decision. While it's in a spectacular location, the hotel is decidedly mediocre. We stood in reception for 10 minutes waiting to check in which was then less than warm and friendly. We were escorted to our room with my husband and I lugging our suitcases. NO attempt by the staff member to assist. On arriving at our room we discovered twin beds despite requesting a Queen. After 20 minutes we were moved to another room, again expected to carry our own bags. The room was clean, if basic and quite noisy. We decided not to eat at the hotel as it wasn't exactly inviting. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.

Room Tip: Be sure to request a quiet room
