Without a doubt, Shepherd's Tree Game Lodge blew away any expectation we had. The staff, facilities and experience were beyond compare. The rooms were amazing with views of the valley and impeccably clean everyday. The food was always fresh and delicious. From the check-in staff to the wait staff, each made us feel as though we were the most important person there. Our Game Guide, Sam, made the trip a once-in-a-lifetime experience and gave us memories we'll have forever. He was knowledgeable, accommodating, friendly and had an intuitive sense of where to find the game. We saw the

An amazing place with amazing food and amazing game drives. Ranger ruan is the man! Great guide and very knowledgeable. Our visit was vastly enhanced by having him as our guide. The lodge itself was incredible, the food and staff were exceptional!

Very happy to report that we saw all of the animals we had hoped to see! If a safari is on your bucket list but you don't want to sleep in a tent, this is the way to do it. They took great care of us; we were always comfortable; food was excellent. We had one guide in particular -- Solly -- who knew absolutely everything: every flower, every bird, and of course every animal.

Wow, what an incredible experience!! Let me start with saying how wonderful EVERY single member of the lodge’s staff were. I can not rave enough about how welcoming, helpful, and customer oriented everyone is. Dumi went above and beyond to make everything PERFECT for us. The lodge itself is nestled in a gorgeous surrounding, the rooms were exquisite and had an exceptional view. We were even fortunate enough to have an elephant come up to the lodge’s watering hole. How awesome is that! The outdoor shower (offering complete privacy) made me smile every time I showered. The pool area and decks were perfect for enjoying a late afternoon cocktail. The safari drives were wonderful.. We were lucky enough to see 4 of the big 5 and many other beautiful creatures. We can not rave enough about our game driver, Solly. Kathy was good, but Solly was GREAT!!! I would recommend Sherherd’s lodge to anyone and everyone. It’s just a beautiful place, with beautiful people, and outstanding service.

I don't even know where to start because our stay at Shepherd's Tree was just so incredible. We went there for our honeymoon and couldn't have had a better or mor memorable experience. First, the welcome. Dumi, the manager, is extremely kind and very attentive to details. You tell her your preference and she remembers everything! You arrive and are given warm hand towels to wipe off and a delicious welcome beverage (ours was a raspberry mocktail of sorts), and even though we arrived ahead of schedule, they provided lunch for us (though it was close to lunch service being over). We were given the most incredible room with a fruit and snack basket and a lovely bottle of wine. The beds are fantastic- they must be California King size- and are extremely comfortable. The bathroom has a really nice double vanity, beautiful tub and an outdoor shower that the best thing ever on a warm day. Our room also had a living room, a private balcony with a small pool which was amazing. On one of the days, that included a private view of the elephant breeding herd which was an amazing site to see. The room was a furthest away from the reception area which gave us a little extra privacy too which was nice. The lodge has porters that will pick you up in golf carts to take you back and forth from your room (ours was about a 10 minute walk so we opted to walk sometimes if it wasn't too hot) and all of the porters are extremely friendly and tell jokes and just always have a smile—even at 530am which is when they come to pick you up for the morning game drive.

Second, the food. The food was incredible and there's so much of it. We definitely gained weight on this trip. There is a light morning coffee/tea at 5:30 which has fruit, some scones or muffins and cereal items. During the morning game drive you generally also stop for a quick coffee and biscuit/cookie snack. After the game drive there is a full breakfast. Then there's a three course lunch. Then there's afternoon tea at 4:30 with tea sandwiches and little desserts before the afternoon game drive. Then there's snacks and (optional) beverages at your sundowner during the game drive. Then there's a three course (maybe it was four courses some times?) dinner afterwards. Its just so much delicious food. We stayed through a weekend and one night they did a dinner that was outside sort of luau style (bush dinner I think they call it) that had so many options for every palate. Its impossible not to gorge yourself. Hat's off to the chef.

Lastly, and most importantly, the game drives. You get "assigned" (although you can opt to change them if you want) to one guide for the entirety of your stay. We had Ranger Ruan and wow did he really make it the trip of a lifetime for us. We saw almost all of the big 5 (the buffalo were being elusive because of rain but we saw everything else and it now gives us a reason to go back!) and he made the game drives fun and excited and he just has so much knowledge. We were so impressed. For our last game drive, he and the other guides from the lodge knew exactly where to go to give their guests a front row view to a lion pride crossing the road. They instinctively knew what the lions were going to do and how to setup the situation to make sure the guests from Shepherds Tree were right where the action would be. It was perfectly timed. Our last night at the lodge, he even helped the rest of the team at the lodge surprise us with a beautiful welcome back to our room that had rose petals and champagne and a hot bubble bath drawn. We had opted to walk back to our room (which would have meant the water would be cold) and he came by to pick us up to make sure we got to our room quickly.

Pilanesburg is beautiful and has the added benefit of being malaria free (unlike Kruger) which makes it a great option for those with sensitivites to malaria pills.

I truly don't have the words to express how wonderful our experience was at Shepherd's Tree. We will absolutely be back.
