What a fantastic place! The chalets were lovely. You had everything you might need under one thatched roof. What a revelation to wake up in the bush every morning. The lodge is situated on the owners' private game reserve, so you could walk anywhere you wanted and see wildlife. At night, when the sky was clear, you could see a sky filled with brilliant stars. Evening meals were delicious and plentiful. My husband said it was his favourite food of the whole trip. Incidentally, we are vegetarians, and we were catered for very well. We booked in on the safari special, and both the game drive and the boat cruise were amazing. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay, I hope we can come again sometime.

Dear Elena,
Thanks for your glowing and descriptive review - much appreciated. Thanks also for mentioning the food; we certainly don't aspire to be the next Masterchef, but we do aim to make our meals both plentiful and tasty in a home-style kind of way!
Hope to see you both again soon.
Kind Regards
Paul

We had a wonderful time on the thatched roof cottage which is fully equipped for self catering, however we took the dinner, bed and breakfast option. The food was out of this world. A short drive to Hluhluwe game reserve and 30 min drive to the St Lucia estuary. We had a fabulous time.

Dear Lara,
Thanks for your review, and we're glad you enjoyed yourselves. "Tranquil" is definitely a good description of Malala - if the city and its noise are getting to you, then Malala will provide you with the respite you need!
Hope to see you both again soon.
Kind Regards
Paul

We stayed for three nights in one of the lodge's cottages (Inala). These are separated from the main reception/dining/bar building, giving a marvellous sense of being enveloped by the African bush without being too far from a cool beer. One morning we had Wildebeeste outside our front door, which caused our 8 year old son great excitement. As well as the large mammals (Nyala etc), the reserve around the lodge is is great for birdwatching.
The accommodation was clean and well maintained. Food - home-cooked breakfasts and evening meals - was fine and plentiful. What made our stay particularly enjoyable was the friendliness of the reception by Paul, Lesley and Pete. We were made to feel very much at home, including an introduction to the pet hedgehog. Pete also took us on a bush drive into Hluhluwe reserve (part of the three night package) which included great sightings of White Rhino, Elephant and much more. The Lodge is also well located for trips to iSimangaliso Wetland Park - particularly the False Bay and Western Shore areas (the latter also proving good for both birdwatching and mammal sightings).
We would certanly return.

Dear Mike,
Thanks for your review.
Thanks also for mentioning the privacy of the units and the bird-watching. Our chalets and cottages are specifically tucked away in the bush surrounding the main lodge, ensuring a quiet and private stay. As regards birding, we are at the centre of the birding hotspot of KwaZulu-Natal, with over 500 species recorded in the Elephant Coast area and 270+ currently on the Malala Lodge birdlist.
We hope to see the three of you again soon.
Kind Regards
Paul

Great location with several wild parks within one hour drive. We stayed here for 4 nights on bed, breakfast and dinner. Very nice central facilties including swimming pool, bar, lounge, dining area and WiFi hot spot. You can walk around and spot a.o birds, zebra's, nyala's and duikers. Lesley, Paul and Peter are ver helpfull, knowledgable and friendly people. I would recommend to ask there assistance in planning your visit to the area as soon as possible. We would probably have changed plans and booked an additional game drive with Pete in iMfolozi park. This drive takes a day and starts with a night in the lodge. Breakfasts are great and dinner is good to excellent. The cottage we had has excellent beds. The facilties itself are not luxurious and self catering facilties are a bit basic. But hey, why would you selfcater with the meals that are provided?

Thanks for your lovely and informative review, Rinus.
We are very centrally located relative to the attractions of the area: Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is 25 minutes north, Mkhuze 45 minutes north, St Lucia is 45 minutes south and the Western Shores of the Isimangaliso Wetland Park is 25 minutes south of Malala.
Thanks also for pointing out that we're not luxurious; we aim for very comfortable but certainly not luxury - we are a 3 star lodge after all.
We hope to see you all again soon.
Kind Regards
Paul
