Owner description: This is Durban’s evocative and graphic apartheid museum and includes an interesting beer brewing and distribution exhibit.

I took a visitor from Norway to this museum an felt VERY let down. The staff didn't even seem to notice that we were there. No friendly greetings, no informative help, just nothing. The displays were also very rundown.... Durban can and should do a better job of this very important museum!

Despite checking websites - and the board outside - were dropped off here to find it was closed on New Year's Eve (which is a normal working day).

This trip gives a great idea of how bad the segregation was during the apartheid times in South Africa. From bars to taxis to dompasses, this museum bares it all perfectly.

I found this small museum to be very interesting and gave a good understanding of apartheid. The photos were intense illustrations of what went on during that time. One display which I keep remembering is a huge (6 foot) blow up of the passport all blacks had to have on their persons at all times. Each page was reproduced so you could flip through the book and see what information was recorded. Employers had to sign people in and out of their jobs if the jobs were located in an area banned for blacks. We only had a short time in the museum and I could have spent an hour or more going over all the displays.

Sadly I left this museum not much wiser than when I arrived. I think it has lots of potential, but the history and message was not put across clearly.
