Review of The Pioneer

The Pioneer is tucked away under the hideous Nautilus building, set a bit back from the main drag of Orewa. We visited with friends on a Saturday afternoon and were surprised to see the place totally deserted. The German owner was friendly and the place did have a Teutonic vibe, although considering it was Christmas time the decorations were very understated. However, the permanent decorations of blown up images of colonial Orewa were worth the visit alone. The draft beer was top notch and the pub grub went down a treat. Although a few people did show up later on, the atmosphere was a bit flat, or I woud have ranke dit higher.

We pre booked a fixed meal for 25 people and it went well. Our roast dinner was served to all of is in a short time. The meal was cooked well the vegetables firm as I like them. The sweet was well presented. The bar has a really good range of draught beers, the German wheat beer brought back memories of our holiday on the Rhine. Some interesting photos on the walls of the pioneer Orewa days.
