We very much enjoyed our one night here. It is the only homestay in the village, so a lovely quiet spot with friendly people and few other tourists. Although the facilities are shared we had a large private room and this was a much more comfortable homestay than others that we stayed in or visited. The meal in the evening was really good. Compared to some previous reviews ..... the weather was fine in early March and it was particularly quiet as there were only 4 guests. The walk around the village and surrounding paddy fields (with the Topas guide) was very interesting.

We spent two nights at the Nam Cang Riverside Lodge in October 2017. We decided not to combine it with the Topas Ecolodge, and while I know that is a beautiful site, we were glad to stay in one place for two nights since we had been traveling a lot. We are not serious trekkers or hikers, but still wanted to take advantage of the hiking in the area, and staying put at Nam Cang allowed us to do two short hikes on the days of arrival and departure, and a longer (5 hour) hike on the full day in between.

Our guide, Trung, was wonderful. He is a local guy with encyclopedic knowledge of plants and animals of the area, and customs of the people, and he was open about sharing everything with us. On our hike he had us stop in at several people's houses for short visits, and we very much appreciated that opportunity, as well as having his explanations on what we were seeing.

Other reviewers have mentioned being followed by women who want to sell goods, particularly near the town of Sapa. This did not happen to us, although we were not close to town. If it had, I believe our guide would have made our wishes not to be followed known, since he was careful to find out about us, including our preferences and gauge our hiking abilities in order to plan our route.

Also, other reviewers have mentioned being bothered by the noise of other guests at the lodge. I can definitely see how that could happen since it is a simple structure and there is no soundproofing. On our first night there was a large group of German tourists who were a bit loud at dinner, and although they had some conversation after dinner it did not go on for too long and they left the next morning. On our second night, there were other smaller groups of tourists who were pretty quiet and respectful. I don't know if we were lucky, or if Topas Travel has instituted new policies to keep things quieter. The place does seem to be used by various guides, some affiliated with Topas and others just passing through, so if I had it to do over again, I would inquire about this ahead of time. On the other hand, we had no issue with noise during our stay. The noisiest thing at night was the sound of the river rushing over the rocks right outside our window, and that was lovely.

One option is to take an herb bath before dinner. At first I was reluctant because I thought it sounded touristy, but was very glad I did it. A local woman gathers herbs (you can go with her to pick the herbs, but I didn't do that) and then boils water over a fire until it is very hot, and adds both the herbs and water to a wooden tub. You, the guest, soak in the tub for 30 minutes. The herbs are supposed to be medicinal. I'm not sure what their effect really is, but I was told that local women take these baths after childbirth. In any event, they give off a nice, light fragrance. The water is very hot - I had to add cold water to tolerate it at all, but once I got it adjusted, I relished the opportunity to sit quietly in the tub, lit only by candles, and think about the day's hike. The tub in the photo doesn't look like much, but at night with the candle light and crackling fire nearby, it really is lovely.

Dear boatbabe. Thanks for your informative review. I hope it will inspire others to visit our Riverside Lodge. It is true, in Nam Cang you are not followed by sellers of handicraft. You are far from mass tourism and close to both lovely Red Dao minorities, river and jungle. Welcome back! BR Asger Koppen, General Director.

We recently stayed for 2 nights. It’s a beautiful place for hiking, the village is situated at the end of the valley. Friendly people, good food, although breakfast consists of pancakes. The rooms are cosy with warm beds and a heater.
What we didn’t like was that the public dining room was cold. So the food cooled down quickly. I would advise this lodge to burn a fire inside. It was really not nice but we must say that at the time we were there it was cold in North Vietnam. The herbal bath is worthwhile.

This place has an amazing view and relaxing environment. It's more hardcore though and more like glamping then a hotel stay. Shared bathrooms no real showers, shower with the toilet. It was quite cold and damp at night. The time of year we went it was very rainy too so everything got muddy. Don't forget anything bug spray, hiking boots suncream. Food was excellent but we enjoy Asian food. Our guide was excellent and we enjoyed spending time with him. It is community living so not much privacy and lost of bugs. If you enjoy staying in a cabin you'll enjoy this stay.

We chose this lodge as a part of a combo with the Topas Ecolodge. The lodge lived up to expectations and the pictures on its website being remote in a village that has only recently been introduced to tourism which was the attraction. The lodge is basic but comfortable, so don’t expect air conditioning (other than on the great riverside open veranda!) or en-suite bathrooms but do expect a beautiful location away from it all. We had a family room on the 1st floor which was large and had 4 beds, fans, and mosquito nets, and comfortable beds (albeit a little damp as it was the wet season).

Meals are included and are served in the communal area downstairs. The food is authentic local homecooked, is very nice, flavoursome and there’s no shortage of it which is perfect when your having active days.

We shared the lodge with a large party on an organised tour through Topas and whilst the party were very friendly, the guide seemed to want to create a house party atmosphere after dinner in the evening with loud music, singing, and many rounds of rice wine shots. Despite our guide reminding them that we were upstairs after dinner and were a family with children it seemed to be just ignored which undermined the aim of such a rural location for us.

Overnight the monsoon rains came through causing the river to rise substantially, so in the morning our guide was told by the Topas office that our planned trek to the Topas Ecolodge was to be cancelled and that we needed to leave quickly to avoid being stranded by any landslides. Inspite of this warning we were still there waiting at lunchtime and only left when the 4WD brought in another group in to stay the next night. All a bit contradictory but at no point did we feel at threat inspite of the raging torrent of a river outside as our guide was throughly professional.

The lodge has great potential but seems to be being let down by the operation by Topas as we couldn’t fault the location or the local staff. If the guides of some larger tours want to create a more lively atmosphere then maybe they should be taking over the whole lodge as it seems to go counter to what most guests would be attracted by with the great rural location which has so much to offer.

Room Tip: The family rooms are a good size for up to 4 people

Dear a1001.
Thanks for your honest review. I am happy that you liked Nam Cang Riverside Lodge, I am however not very impressed by the guide of the big group. We will look into the operation now. BR Asger
