We stayed at the Samudra for 5 nights on a B&B basis.

Initially we were delighted. The room was spacious and (on the face of it) clean, cool, comfortable and with a great view from the balcony of the hotel grounds and beach beyond.

However after visiting other places including some lovely Homestays on our tour of Kerala we found this place quite 'soulless'. The hotel is also need of quite a bit of maintenance. There were also quite a number of filthy mattresses left dotted about the corridors.

The hotel has a 'beer parlour' but this was a sad squalid room which we chose not to use.

Unfortunately we lost the key to our room on day 1. We were charged a hefty Rs 1500 for a replacement. I asked why the charge for a key was so high and was told that this was 'Hotel policy' since the lock would have to be changed. Fair enough I thought but the trouble was that the lock was never changed during our stay. (I doubt that it ever will be) this left our room unsecure for most of our stay. Despite my polite protests nothing was done and no money was refunded for the 'lock change'.

I should also mention the furry rodent a saw running down the wall on our final morning. This was no squirrel!

I smell a rat!

Food (breakfast) was quite good but little variety day to day. For other meals we used the nearby restaurants which were excellent.

Thank Terry M

We like to stay at Samudra Beach as it's within easy reach of the busy Lighthouse beaches but a bit quieter and more relaxed.
In the morning the fishermen all pull in their huge net and you can watch as the customers turn up to see what they've caught.
The northern end isn't really safe for swimming but still ok for sitting in the sand at the edge and letting the sea splash round you.
There are some good restaurants which all have tables overlooking the beach so you can look at the view or enjoy the sunset as you eat. There are a few shops to browse around and a tailor keen to whip you up an outfit.

This is not a beach in the same way Kovalam or Lighthouse beach is a beach. Samuarda beach is a short drop, some large rocks (+ litter) then the sea (which was rough when we visited in March). I believe it used to be a sandy beach before a tsunami a couple of years ago, hence more positive reviews and photos from reviews in the past. It's saving grace is that there are some great restaurants on the beachfront where you can eat and watch the sun go down.

The beach is a quiet place perfect for a romantic sunset and for a good dinner. There are restaurants with tables directly on the shore and no people passing by.

For swimming or for children is the beach not suitable because of the rocks.

I enjoyed a great meditation on sunset there!
