If you are an American, you will feel very much at home in this modern, clean, safe former Victorian mansion converted into a charming boutique hotel. There is a lovely courtyard with stained glass and outdoor dining. The grounds have actually several landscaped & well manicured courtyards. The perfect combination of modern and classic, familiar and exotic. The restaurant is very expensive, but the nicest you will find in all of Costa Rica. Even by American standards, this hotel and restaurant are both 5 stars. We didn't much care for San Jose, but you are only a few blocks (or a few dollar cab ride) away from the downtown area or "Cultural Square" which is of course worth checking out if you're in the area. I've been told not to walk around this neighborhood at night. The beautiful building and lush landscaping stick out like a sore thumb in this neighborhood. The front desk staff was fluent in English and incredibly helpful and friendly. Nice gift shop with local art work. The hot tubs on the roof are fantastic and make you feel like you're far away from the dirty city. There is a safe in the room, air conditioning and hot water. You can drink the water here, as there is a filter on campus and there is literature about their filtration process, if you are hesitant. Small hotel - probably about 10 rooms altogether. The elevator only gets you to several of the rooms, some of the rooms require stairs. All the comforts from home. If in the area again, this would be my first choice.

This is truly a little gem. It is a little hotel, formerly a mansion owned by a coffee baron, near but not too near the heart of San Jose. I have been in many a hotel in and around San Jose, and throughout the country of Costa Rica. This happens to be the hotel with the best, and in fact one of the only, gourmet restaurants in Costa Rica. If you are looking for a great restaurant with something above the level of fastfood, chains, or that of the Tico diners (called "sodas") food, in other words a more refined cuisine, in San Jose, it is very hit or miss. You might try Macchu Picchu for Peruvian cuisine (pretty good), or Cafe Mundo for various, mostly Italian fare (but a bit hit or miss itself), but if you want something reliably good, and fine, then you have very few choices in Costa Rica.

This is THE restaurant in San Jose, if you want a real restaurant with a fine wine list, and a creative menu with food like you could get in a real restaurant, with a real chef, in a major city in the United States. It is the place if you have a romantic dinner date or any other important occasion requiring a food for discriminating palates.

As for the hotel, it is also the ONLY hotel in San Jose, or even throughout the country, among the many, many in which I have stayed which purport to be 3 to 5 star hotels, where the service was what you would expect - the workers all seem to know what they are doing, want to work, and understand their job is to serve their customers. Most of the hotels throughout the country are overrun with Tico service which is the pits - lazy, even hostile workers who resent their relatively rich foreign guests and sometimes do not hide that fact at all, who have a blase, at best, attitude, and bring down the level of their hotels from what would be 3 or 4 or 5 star hotels (based on the physical features, the amenities, etc.) to a 2 or 2 1/2 star hotel, merely based on their abysmal service and related idiotic management.

If you want perhaps the only hotel in San Jose with great service, in an interesting, museum piece-like hotel (with art inside telling the story of this former home of a coffee millionnaire), with a cute rooftop jacuzzi, and a great restaurant, probably the very best in town, this is your place.

We stayed at Grano de Oro for a single night before catching an early flight home the next morning. The hotel provided a restful sleep in a small but beautifully furnished room with comfortable linens (and the first bathtub I had seen in two weeks)! Staff were excellent and ready to assist with anything.

The restaurant is lovely, with a little open-air courtyard and attentive waiters. However the menu is pricey ($100 US for two people) and features top-end dishes that it can't deliver on. We had steak and pasta with pate as a starter, and none of these were interpreted with much skill. Head down for a drink and enjoy the surroundings, but eat elsewhere.

It is really the best hotel in San Jose. Fantastic food and services. Great rooms at great prices. Made my wife extremely happy which paid for the trip itself.

This hotel is very nice, even if it sticks out like a sore thumb in the really run down area. The service was excellent. We had a larger, family-sized, which was perfect for traveling with two children. The restaurant and bar are very good with an especially tasty breakfast (don't miss the passionfruit juice... they make it into a frozen drink and it is delicious!)
