My wife and I were visiting Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge for second year in a row when we were robbed at gunpoint by three masked young men.My wife ended up biting the man with the gun as he dropped it my wife managed to throw the gun into the dense brush. They were still able to take a backpack with all our pictures of the last two weeks but most importantly we are alive and to come to find out the gun was load but misfired so please if visiting Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge pay a little extra for a guide as our trust has been broken.(Policia report has been filed)

Beautiful bay, sandy beach, village at the end of the road. Very laid back, friendly people. A place where you could completely relax :-)

We booked our tour through ATEC located in the center of Puerto Viejo. We chose ATEC because they support the community with many projects such as school fundraisers. Our guide was Florentino. We highly recommend him. He was enthusiastic, personable and very knowledgeable. He lent us gum boots and showed us around his garden before we started the hike. He made sure we were all safe and comfortable during the hike and gave us options as to difficulty and length of the tour. We saw and heard many birds, bugs and animals including a close up encounter with a sloth. Other interesting critters included poison arrow frogs, eyelash pit vipers, toucans, green parrots and monkeys. We are glad we booked this tour early on in our stay as it helped us to find and identify interesting flora and fauna in other spots when we were on our own. We knew what to look and listen for. We also booked a waterfall and chocolate tour with Tino that was equally fabulous.

My wife, daughter, and I were led through the Manzanillo wildlife refuge by Abel. His knowledge, humor, and experience made this a fantastic experience. If your going on a hike in the refuge, get a guid, and if you get a guid, get Abel!

It was still free but they were building what looked like a large welcome centre so not sure if they will be charging an entrance fee soon. The first part of the trail is easy but soon the trail becomes hilly, muddy and slippery. We were in Manzanillo for 5 days and it rained 2 days (one day practically non stop). We did not see as much wildlife in the park as in Cahuita. We saw a hawk flying with his prey and eating it, butterflies, a scorpion with prey, woodpeckers, toucans, lots of oropendolas (with their beautiful exotic call) and 20-30 of their hanging basket-like nests, agoutis, howler monkeys, weird crabs and in one area a lot of strawberry poison-dart frogs. Also a rocket frog. The beaches are beautiful, the waves huge and we watched people surfing.
