I was excited to take my boyfriend to this restaurant for a special celebration, since we've been to beer gardens in Germany and he loves them, so I wanted to try and relive that experience somewhere here in CR. After looking around I decided to go to Casa Bavaria.
What a disappointing experience!
The restaurant grounds are very beautiful and well kept and the house itself does have a style that reminds you of Germany with the flag waving and everything, However that's pretty much the only “Bavarian” thing in this place.
We got to the restaurant and there was no one on the entrance from the 2nd floor, and I mean no one! It was deserted. We had to find our own way to an available table on the ground floor guided by the sound of people talking, and then wave our arms like crazy for 15 minutes before a waiter came to our table. He did not bring the "a la carte" menu, because they want you to try the buffet and that was what they offered, so, we did. We ordered our drinks and went ahead to the buffet, which was nothing impressive, all regular Costa Rican food that I could eat any day of the week at home: fish, chicken, pork, rice, "picadillo", salads etc, the selection was not bad and the food was not bad either, but I was not expecting to drive so far away from my home (around 1.30 hours) and pay $24 per person to go and eat a "casado" (typicall Costa Rican dish), I eat that every day!!!
To make things worse, they have no selection of beers whatsoever, they had the national beers, which again I can have at home for half the price, and the foreign beers they had were Paulaner, which was sold out on our visit and Oettinger which I dislike, so I ended up having a light ginger ale. When the drinks came, the waiter forgot my boyfriend’s beer….
The service, well they were nice, however no one was keeping track of who came in and who left, I swear the table in front of us had dirty dishes with food leftovers since the moment we sat down and it was not clean during the entire time we were there, the same happened with other tables as well.
All in all, this place is not worth it, I am not sure if it was better in the past (I did notice they are selling the place due to a gigantic add they have on the entrance of the restaurant, so that could explain my bad experience), or what, but calling themselves "Casa Bavaria" it’s an overstatement. I will never go back.
