“We loved Casa Muy Grande”
Reviewed 31 July 2012 for a stay in July 2012

Our family of 12 spent a glorious week at Casa Muy Grande. It lived up to all of our expectations. The location was perfect--a beautiful beach that we had virtually to ourselves. The waves were a little wild. We used the surf boards and boogie boards and had lots of fun "rides", even though we were inexperienced.
The house had wonderful outdoor areas. We enjoyed eating at the big table by the grill, we had plenty of family ping pong games, and we slapped the ball around on the fun ball court. We even had an audience of 3 howler monkeys who watched our fun ball tournament! It was great fun to watch the monkeys hang from their tails, chase each other around in the tree tops, etc.
The bedrooms worked well for our adult children. We had plenty of privacy. And the air conditining worked great.
Jose was always on site to help with our questions and to keep the grounds beautiful. There was so much space outside and it was very well maintained. We liked seeing Jose's well-behaved dog Peliche around too.
We felt very safe throughout our visit to Costa Rica and to Playa Grande.
The grocery store was only a couple minute walk away, but it was over-priced. We enjoyed the restaurant/bar that adjoined the grocery store.
We were initially disappointed that the pool was rather small, but it turned out to be perfect for lounging around and reading. If we wanted to swim, we just went to the ocean.
Perfect vacation spot for our family. We made a lot of good memories here.

“Gorgeous Clean House on an Equally Beautiful Beach”
Reviewed 26 April 2012 for a stay in January 2012

We chose to rent this house because of the many positive reviews I read - but they've all disappeared from Tripadvisor. The house is just as it is pictured. The grounds and house are meticulously cared for by a couple that lives on the property. We spent very little time in the house but we cooked a lot and the kitchen was terrific. Everything worked perfectly. We met people renting a house that had black mould in the air conditioner and other problems. Not Casa Muy Grande.

Be aware that the 4 bedrooms on the main floor are set up like motel rooms - they are actually outside of the rest of the house, have their own keys and patio doors. Lovely, but a family with young children would probably feel uncomfortable having their child "outside" the main house - they would have to unlock their door and then the door to the main house to get in. That being said, it was perfect for us and our 3 teenagers who need their space!

The pool is small and shallow but perfect for a dip. We spent more time in the ocean - you can't go in too deep but far enough for a great dip.

We sat outside and ate all of our meals outside. Indoors, as the photo shows there is a funny round couch with a T.V. It's very uncomfortable but we literally sat there for 5 minutes. It's too beautiful outside! Gorgeous birds on the property, a lovely walk down the path to the beach. There are many places to stay just a 5 or 10 minute walk from the beach but there is no shade on the beach so we loved being able to go back and forth easily. If you can afford it, the proximity is worth it (unless you have a beach umbrella).

There is a grocery store a 2 minute walk away, a fish guy who comes through sometimes and nice quiet roads for walking or biking (you can rent bikes). Lots of great restaurants in the area too. You may read that this is not a good beach to learn to surf on, but we found it to be fantastic. Frijolos Locos come to teach just a minute walk down the beach from the house (you can go in or call them to arrange lessons and they will tell you what times are best).

We went into Tamarindo a couple of times - we enjoyed the town but honestly, the beach is not nearly as nice as Playa Grande. Soft golden sand, a nice long walk from end to end. Not a scrap of garbage, not a garbage can in sight. Just enough people to make it feel safe to go for a walk or run alone; never that busy.

It's expensive but for a group or two families it's a wonderful place to stay.

The only negative was in paying the balance. On the papers we signed, it stated that they wanted the balance in US dollars. However, no-one was able to come out to the house for it. When I got hold of someone, they told me that they would just put it on our VISA. I pointed out there would be another 3 or 4 percent (can't remember exactly) added to the bill, but they offered me no alternative or a reduction in the balance. Also, we were given driving directions to the house. They included a lot of stores that are not so obvious to new arrivals - just follow the signs to Playa Grande and come with your own map.

“Excellent.”
Reviewed 17 October 2011 for a stay in October 2011

Casa Muy Grande is dead solid perfect. Here is our context:
-Group of friends (mix of couples and singles)
-Occupied the entire house

First off, Costa Rica is excellent and exceeded my expectations. Having been to more remote places, was not sure what to expect on my frist trip to Costa Rica. Had heard generally positive reviews, but some mixed with the recent development (last 15 yrs) in Tamarindo. None of that had any impact at all and i commented to our group our exceptional this spot still was. Off the beaten path "enough" for a group with access to quite a bit. Specifically, this part of Costa Rica is not for those expecting 5-Star resorts. You can get 5-star accommodation, but it's not the speciality of the area.

As with anywhere in Central or South America...it definitely helps to know a little Spanish.

On to Casa Muy Grande:

Staff: Awesome. Here's the list of reasons why: helpful, thoughtful, hard working, and a good cook. You really cannot ask for much more. The are on-premises and were even there at 4:30AM to say goodbye, etc as we were leaving. They made the trip better and will make yours better as well.

House/Accommodations: Fantastic. Perhaps the most well designed vacation property we have seen. There are 5 bedrooms including the 2nd level master. Each has its own bathroom and large beds. AC in every room, everything worked perfectly. Clean sheets...VERY comfortable beds, pool access from each room, etc. The house is very very well maintained. There are little to no signs of aging and the indoor/outdoor space access is nearly perfect.

Location: You walk to the beach...less than 30 yds. As with all beachfront property in Costa Rica (I learned) in a National Park, you have to have a barrier between the property and the beach. The Staff rakes the path everyday and it's a very nice walk to what amounts to one of the more beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Tamarindo is a cool beach town...know what you coming to when choosing this part of Costa Rica. Playa Grande is a beautiful beach with good surf for those who want to surf. Low tide beach running is fantastic here.

Odds/Ends: Wireless Internet access was flawless for those that want to stay connected. Food at Casa Muy Grande is excellent and you can tailor breakfasts and dinners to what you want (ie: get eggs and beans and rice for a couple if AM's, fish for dinners, and ceviche for afternoon snacks). Hands down the best ceviche I have ever had. For runners, low tide running on the beach is exceptional.

Overall: Casa Muy Grande is awesome. 100% would definitely go back. This is a very nice property and would absolutely recommend this spot.
