“Nice New Paintjob”
Review of Iglesia de Sarchi

Iglesia de Sarchi
Reviewed 26 May 2018

We go to Sarchi around once a year when friends visit and we want to show them around. The church is in the same park as the big oxcart, so it's a nice stop to look around and stretch your legs. The only thing is that the church doesn't seem to ever be open when we go there (most recently it was on a Sunday afternoon). But supposedly it's nice inside. Outside, it's picturesque and we really like the painting and the bas relief-type figures.

Just above the plaza where you will find the world's largest oxcart, is this lovely church with twin towers. The church is painted a beautiful soft turquoise color - very soothing, and complimentary to the architecture. On the top of one of the towers is a cart wheel which commemorates one of the businesses that supported this town.

The central nave of the church is white-washed with natural wood ceilings punctuated by crystal chandeliers. The stained glass windows are simply done, and the floors are of polished limestone. I love the cool, serene look of this church. It's worth a visit if even for only five or ten minutes. Enjoy.

Located in Costa Rica's Central Valley, Sarchi is renowned for its crafts, furniture, and oxcarts. On display in the town's square is the "world's largest oxcart", the official symbol of Costa Rican workers. The brightly painted oxcart was made at the nearby Fabrica de Carretas Eloy Alfaro. Anchoring the square is the lovely twin-towered Iglesia de Sarchi, a church known for its wood carvings and vaulted ceiling..

Church is part of the town square and worth a stop. It is so pretty with impressive wood carvings and chandeliers going down the middle aisle. Stop by for a break from the heat and appreciate the architecture.

Another day, another church. Each one is different. This one is known for it's intricate and well preserved wood carvings. It's worth a quick look.
