Our driver / guide Orlando Vargas took us to this steak house as he has known the family for many years and it was fantastic in all respects - service, food quality and friendliness.

My wife and I first stopped at el Tobagan for lunch after a day of outdoor activities around Arenal. Mauricio, a member of the family that owns the steakhouse, showed us some of the cuts of beef they had to offer. The steaks he offered didn't look at all like the thin, tough cuts that we've seen in some other countries. We chose the steak sandwiches, and were so glad that we did. My wife proclaimed her sandwich the best she had ever had! Here at Tobagan, it's all about the steak. Sides on the orders were simple, fries and salad.
We came back to the Tobagan on our last night in Fortuna, in the middle of a torrential downpour. Mauricio again was our server, and gave us suggestions regarding the dinner menu. I chose the prime rib and my wife had the steak fajitas. My prime rib was superb, and trimmed in a delicious, thick cut of bacon. After quenching our hunger and thirst, Mauricio invited us into the open air kitchen, to see how the dinners were prepared, and what spices and sauces they used. The dinner was a fantastic end to our stay in Fortuna. We will definitely be back next time we are in the Arenal area.

This was the best and most affordable breakfast during our entire stay in Costa Rica. The breakfast consisted of two fried eggs, fried bananas, avocado, beans and rice, cheese and sour cream. The coffee was brewed at our table. It was an amazing breakfast experience. We only wish we had discovered this place earlier in our trip.

While driving back to my hotel we stopped in to satisfy some hungers. Couldn't be happier we did! From Mauricio bringing out different steak cuts for us to choose from, and the coffee being made in front of us at our table. everything about this visit was very vibrant. I left feeling like a friend more than a customer. We stayed after we ate for a bit to chat and was given many recommendations on how to enjoy the area during our stay. Thanks again Mauricio! See you on our next visit to Costa Rica! We will be back for sure :)

We had a number of dishes here: Steak, seafood pasta, fried steak, fried tilapia, rice and seafood, meat tacos, and lots of fresh juice cocktails. The best thing I had was the fried tilapia. To pay close to $25 for a taco, or $30 for fried steak, it better be perfect. This was good, but the ambiance (outdoor, unconditioned dining hall, etc), did not match the menu prices. Having said that, La Fortuna is very touristic and prices are on par, and sometimes higher, than restaurants in major US cities, without the same quality or service. There's nothing on this menu that is creative, but if you get passed that, and your expectation is adjusted, this is one of the better restaurants here.
