Easy, cheep, quick. Simple to figure out if you are okay with maps of your guide tells you where to get off. Some guides even tell you which door to exit at stop as they are all marked. Many of the people riding it are fluent in english and are very helpful if needed. There are many lines and they are numerically marked, all you have to do is know the direction to go and then find your stop. Some of them can be crowed at certain times of the day but I'd say they had another trains spaced about 3 minutes apart. I bought a 3 day pass and when it ran out I added more days to it.

Clean, air conditioned, beautifully signposted in English and Mandarin, safe and fast. It made me embarrassed about the London Underground. The people are considerate and will give up their seat of someone needs it. Even in mad rush hour it was still a pleasure to use.

I decided to use the subway to get to the Pearl Market and it was quite easy. The ticket machines have a button for English and a subway map to choose the get off point and work out the cost (3 stations 3RMB for me) I only saw ones that took cash, but there was a manned ticket office. There were staff at both ends to help and locals are also very happy to assist if they see you need it. The train has a light map on the top of the walls showing the route and direction in English and Chinese, and a bilingual message is announced prior to the station. It was all quite modern and there were escalators at both ends.

The Shanghai metro was easy to use, very efficient and clean and a great deal. Clear maps are everywhere and signage for the exits is great.
