“Zen on the Bund”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2012

Everything from its lobby to spa to decor in the room exudes the spirit of ZEN. I stayed at this hotel a number of times and each time I became more impressed with its interior decor, which helps me cleanse my mind. I suspect (though without verification) its interior is done by a Japanese decorator. A standard room is extremely functional which maximizes utility of every inch without any wastage. Yet, all your personal needs are attended to without exception. There is no ostentation - in contrast to the vast, gaudy display of wealth - at other hotels in China. Service is attentive and speedy. Restaurants are well furnished with broad menu. Spa is very well equipped and well.... ZEN.

It is situated at the edge of Bund, so not centrally located. Perhaps that's how you keep your ZEN...

My husband and i decided to stay here for our honeymoon, which turned out to be one of the best decisions we made during this holiday. Upon entering, Hyatt on the Bund presents itself as spacious (high ceilings which i love) and modern, with an understated elegance.

The staff all come across as immaculately well mannered, warm and prompt, which made our check in very smooth and enjoyable as we spoke about the abundance of places we could visit during our stay. After entering our room, the view was something that really took my breath away. It was the perfect balance between the view of the Pudong and Pu Xi, Hyatt on the Bund truly offers one of the best views in Shanghai. I very much appreciated the attention to detail the room offers which i believe are important traits that really takes a hotel that extra mile and makes much more of an impression. Make sure to visit View bar upstairs, which offers an impeccable view of the city and great selection at the bar. If the weather permits allow yourself to enjoy the view of the city in the jacuzzi upstairs at the bar!

Do yourself a favour and visit the restaurant within the hotel called Xin da Lu, which i must say left us both very much pleasantly surprised. After having visited Beijing's famous restaurants for Peking Duck, Xin Da Lu's was by far much better! Also definitely worth trying the other dishes. The food was so delightful, that we decided to return on the last day of our stay so we could tantalize our taste buds and leave not feeling the slightest bit of regret.

The location is perfect, offering peace and tranquility when wanted but at the same time within close proximity to where all the buzz and energy lies within the city.

Special thank you to Neil who is a fine example of the impeccable service Hyatt on the Bund offers. His extensive knowledge of the city and warm hospitality definitely added to the enjoyment of our stay. Offering fabulous recommendations ranging from various cuisines to even massages and the nightlife.

Upon our return back to Shanghai in the future, Hyatt on the Bund will most definitely be our first choice of accommodation.

Thanks for making our stay so wonderful.

Have stayed at the Hyatt on the Bund three times now and each time my wife and I enjoy it more. Our room had an outstanding view of both the Bund and Pudong and was always in pristine condition. The staff are the other amazing asset of this hotel. Every request was dealt with professionally and politely. Especially pleased with our check-in and the services provided by the concierge. The latter went out of their way to find a non-hotel car to take us to the water towns and did not try to push their ownb product. Extremely satisfied.

Room Tip: rooms on the 31st flloor, east tower provide a broad panorama of the Bund.

That is, if you get a Bund view room like I did. Failing that, the hotel's very own Vue Bar is not to be missed (in any event!).

Other than that, pretty standard Hyatt fare: good location (between old town Puxi and the new part Pudong), friendly-ish staff, decent gym and overall pleasantness.

That said, with Park Hyatt being my firm favourite, and that I have yet to try the brand new Andaz, I am afraid I will not return to HOTB any time soon...

Incidentally, just realised that I haven't included my customary recommendation for restaurants so here they are:

Cuivre - a French restaurant recommended by a French friend. Run by a very friendly French lady (bon jour, Fanny!) who will make you feel very welcome indeed. The decor, ambience and vibe are decidedly European, in a very good way. But in addition to all this, what sold the place for me was the food... Try the foie gras and truffle risotto by all means! Do book in advance, especially at weekends: +86 21 64374219

Lost Heaven - a popular haunt amongst discerning locals and visitors alike that serves up delicious Yunnanese cuisine, which is a cross between Thai and Chinese food. There are two branches but try the one just off the Bund.

Simply Thai - Surprisingly authentic with a few branches in town.

Ye Shanghai - In the touristy Xintiandi area but don't let that put you off. Commendable Shangainese food served in a beautiful restaurant.

South Beauty (IFC flagship branch) - Modernised and stomach-friendly Sichuan food, ever so dependable if you fancy spicing things up, literally!

Room Tip: Bund view room, no question!

The rooms here are nice and big with chairs for lounging and gazing out at the amazing view of the river. The trendy bar on the top is fun to explore, but drinks are pricey. The restaurant was also pretty expensive, better to stick with the lower level restaurant for breakfast (make sure its included) and go out for other meals. Its a short walk to the Bund and a really good value overall.
