“A relaxing and enjoyable stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 February 2012

The first thing you'll notice is the location, this Westin is right in the heart of Puxi and just a short walk from the Bund, home to a number of great restaurants, bars and general hotspots. The facility itself is beautiful and very well kept with comfortable rooms, sprawling common areas dotted with comfortable seating and an attentive, well trained staff. We were only able to stay for a night but I have been to this Westin on a number of other occasions strictly for the brunch. If you have the time, by all means make the effort to attend the Sunday Champagne Brunch. It is a little on the pricey side but is by all means worth it, with a selection of seafood, American and Chinese delicacies paired with a constant flow of Veuve Clicquot champagne ending with an enormous selection of chocolates and desserts.

We missed the Sunday brunch, unfortunately, and had the more simple fare of the morning brunch on Monday, it was still delicious with plenty to offer. The workout facilities have equipment that is a little dated but they are well maintained and there are enough of them that we didn't have to wait for a machine. The room itself was well stocked and comfortable and ours featured a view of the city, the Bund and the river. We had received some vouchers for breakfast and for refreshments but didn't have enough time to sample everything. The staff was helpful and responsive, bringing ice to our room when we decided on a private nightcap within minutes of calling and allowing us a late check-out to coincide with our departure flights. All of this coupled with free WiFi and I can't wait to go back, next time staying over for the Sunday morning brunch...

I stayed here for a 3 nights in December and was so satisfied I am returning next week for longer stay. I was upgraded to a Crown Studio and greeted courteously and by name when i returned to the hotel from a meeting. Having arrived from a similarly priced shoebox-sized dump in Hong Kong, i was delighted with the size and space of the studio. I had no trouble with WIFi.

I especially liked the healthy cuisine room service options and the food in the Crystal Garden. Room service was fast and friendly with HOT food delivered - not always the case even in the best hotels. Since I travel to Shanghai frequently, I intend to make this my home-away from home.

This hotel was recommended by our tour company China Odyssey Tours as part of our Grand China tour. We travelled as a family of 4 and occupied 2 rooms. We stayed 3 nights. As we entered through the doors, we could tell that this hotel was going to be something special. A large grand “glass” staircase which changes colors was the show case in the lobby. This staircase extended to some 5 floors and behind that a large spacious atrium lobby and further behind a large restaurant.
Check in was good but was disappointed that they did not accept my Starwood Preferred Guest card as the hotel rates were already paid for by the tour company. I informed the front desk person that it was I who ultimately paid for the rooms but through the tour agency but he was steadfast on his reply which I thought was a bummer. This was our 10th 5 star hotel that we have visited in China this trip and every hotel where we have stayed in where I have a “club” card had no problems accepting the cards. This included some Starwood properties. So one big negative for this hotel.
The rooms were modern and of a decent size. I like the fact that this had a separate “cubicle” for the shower and toilet which is fantastic. A separate bath area made the bathroom/toilet quite spacious. I especially loved the huge overhead shower which allowed us to indulge in a torrent of water. Bathroom amenities provided were the standard offerings.
The bedroom was spacious enough with adequate space to allow for a small sitting area and a decent desk/work area that included a printer. Ideal for a business trip.
The most important thing was that the standard of cleanliness of the room and bathroom was great, so a one big plus!
The buffet breakfast was good with a very good selection. The A la carte menu at the restaurants however was a bit disappointing and hence we did not eat at any of the restaurants.
The gym was well equipped with a decent sized heated indoor pool. We did not try the in house Spa.
The location was ideal for us, a short walk to the Bund, the “Old” city and about 10 minutes comfortable walk to Nanjing road for shopping so it was well located for us. The concierge was very helpful and wrote down all the directions to the taxi drivers for us and also verbally informed them of our destination and taxis were plentiful.
We were pleasantly surprised when we returned home after touring for the day to find that the hotel management provided a beautiful cake for my wife’s birthday. You really cannot beat that for “looking after your guests”. This wonderful gesture was truly appreciated.
Overall a very good experience. Unless there was a hotel with a higher standard of service and better location and price we would be only too happy to return and recommend this hotel to visitors to Shanghai.

Dear Family Bunbury,
Thank you for sharing your Westin experience with our friends at tripadvisor and we are thrilled to have received an almost full score. The property is indeed very unique with the Staircase and Crown above the Bund Center - are designer icons in the city.

I do apologize about the sturdiness of our associate on the Starwood Preferred Guest membership. You can earn points on spending except on the rooms if they are already prepaid through a third party. Feel free to send us an e-mail at dutymanager-shanghai@westin.com for us to rectify this.

We look forward in being of service in the future should your travels bring you back to Shanghai.

Yours Sincerely,

Andreas Trauttmansdorff

We stayed here for 3 nights just before Christmas 2011 in an Executive Suite while our son stayed in an Executive Studio Room. Overall our experience was good and on a scale of 1 to 10 we give it a 7.

Positives first. Service generally was very good, we were never left waiting. Staff were attentive and English was note a problem. Concierge recommended a couple of nice restaurants and made reservations for us.

The rooms were very spacious and well laid out and our suite had the benefit of two toilets.

We had access to the Executive Club floor so we were able to have a very peaceful and relaxing breakfast which was a nice way to start the day.

Now for negatives. The water pressure in the shower was too light. They had a great ceiling rainwater shower but because the pressure was so light, it was difficult to just wash your hair properly.

At the breakfast buffet, staff did not replenish food regularly, many items were empty so you just had to eat what was available.

The main lobby restaurant was not really up to Westin standard and the menu selection was pretty limited.

The internet access is incredibly slow and you get charged per device for wifi connection.

The location of the Hotel is not really ideal for tourists, there is not much in the immediate vicinity other than the Bund. On our next trip to Shanghai, we will probably try and stay in the French Concession area.

So overall, we were happy to have tried this hotel on our first trip to Shanghai. I think that it is more of a business hotel than a tourist hotel though.

Dear Cathnedonhols,
Many thanks to you for staying with us and for having taken the time to write us feedback. Your feedback is critical to ensuring that we strive for excellence in everything we do.

Whilst I note that you were in general quite happy, I would like to sincerely apologize for the shortcomings during your stay and give our assurance that we will be working closely with our teams to ensure we are better prepared and avoid similar occurrences in the future.

Our location is both great for business & leisure being so close to the Bund, YuYuan Gardens and Nanjing Shopping District, while Xintiandi is a 10-minute taxi ride. The inexpensive taxis whisk you all over Shanghai easily. However, in the future, should another centrally-touristy address appeals to you more, we’re happy to let you know that Starwood currently have eight hotels in Shanghai, hence, we’re confident that one of our hotels will definitely meet your location desire – wherever it may be in this vibrant city.

We do hope that we may welcome you back to Shanghai. Wish you well on your travels.
Sincerely yours,

Lars van der Most
