Sheraton Shanghai Hongkou Hotel
Ranked #78 of 5,140 Hotels in Shanghai
Reviewed 29 May 2012

My room at this hotel was first-rate! In fact, the room and service was outstanding. I also had an excellent meal at the Japanese restaurant on the top floor.

The location is OK. Shanghai is an extraordinarily large city and, given that fact, this is pretty central. There is no walkable night life in the area, however. The subway is just across the street with easy access to the Bund and French Concession areas.
You won't need to work out in the gym if you are eating breakfast at the hotel. The buffet selection is nice, but the food areas are spread out all over an entire floor of the hotel. It is such a hike between the eggs and breads and cereals that you can guarantee that the eggs will get cold before you get back to your table. Pity that such an obvious problem is overlooked.

A high standard Sheraton hotel. At first sight, maybe not so near the tourist attractions, but actually yes. "Near in the sense of" : Metro/Subway just across the street (with two Metro-lines),
taxi very inexpensive and last, but not least, several areas just 100 meters/yards on either side of the hotel with genuine Chinese local residencies, including hundreds of small stores, street markets etc.
A full size Swimming Pool with Gym room - perfect to relax.
Don't bother using Metro/Maglev train to & from Pudong Airport/PVG. Taxi ride aprox 180 Yuan each way.
The Maglev/Magnetic train require two additional Metro lines to reach the Sheraton, unless one take the very long Metro (change to another line) all the way from Main International Airport - Pudong/PVG.
But do take the Maglev/Magnetic train as a Sigthseeing tour (80 Yuan round trip) with the fantastic speed of 430 km/h. Make sure you go 0900-1045 or 1500-1645 to hit the 430 km/h.
Other times the Maglev "only" travels 300 km/h...

I had an early flight to Shanghai and was at the hotel at 9.30am expecting to just drop my bags off and then head out while I waited for the normal checkin time. To my surprise they checked me straight in - I took advantage of the offer of upgrading to a club room which had free use of the club lounge (breakfast, evening meal, drinks\wine and wifi included). This proved to excellent - all the food was wonderfully cooked and a different choice each day and a great place to relax after the hussle and bussle of Shanghai during the day. The room was large by UK standards with a walk in wet room for the shower and bath. Hotel was very clean and staff were very helpful and polite. I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to Shanghai as it is across the street from a metro station so very easy to get to. Only drawback is that there is no nightlife in the hotel area but with the metro being so easy to use that didn't prove to be a problem.

Room Tip: Outside the hotel, across Siping Road, turn right and then left (1min from hotel) is a small shop li...

We live in a condominium Hotel project called the Arrabelle in Vail Colorado. Vail resorts touts the Arrabelle as their flagship property within the Rock Resort group. We have been traveling to China and Asia twice a year for the last several years. We are Platinum Starwood members and generally stay in Starwood hotels. Staying at the Sheraton Hongkou Hotel is a wonderful experience. I wanted to comment positively on the physical property, the staff, and in particular Nitin Abbi's smooth operation of the 37th floor Executive Lounge.

I love to swim for exercise, but until now I have always contracted a respiratory infection from pools in China. The swimming pool at the Sheraton Hongkou is spacious with crystal clear water. The staff generally enforces the swimming cap rule and showering beforehand. I am so pleased to be able to swim without getting ill.

The location of the hotel nestled within an old established Shanghai neighborhood in transition, and also across the street from a subway stop. This location allowed us to readily enjoy the advantages and charms of both old and new Shanghai.

The warm and competent service provided by Mr. Abbi is truly remarkable. His staff is very responsive, but the difference between when he is present or absent is dramatic. This is an observation made by other guests as well. Of course, his fluency in English is important, but his open, and pleasant personality and demeanor is what compelled me to write this note. Even though the lounge can be quite busy at times, Nitin greets, interacts, and helps almost every guest in the Executive lounge.

In rating thia Hotel I enthusiastically rate it five thumbs up in all categories of physical facility, value, location, staff, and executive lounge quality.

While in Shanghai, I was debating which SPG hotel to pick and finally narrowed the selections down to the Royal Meridien on Nanjing Rd and this almost brand-new Sheraton in the Hongkou District which is north of the Bund. This Sheraton is a SPG category 3 hotel while the Meridien is a category 5 one; although the rack rates of them are similar, both starting from roughly $200 (~1200 RMB) per night, it makes a huge difference when redeeming SPG points. However, don’t be fooled by the SPG internal ratings, as both are 5-star hotels. I was extremely satisfied once I arrived at the hotel lobby and entered my Premier room, which was sorta an upgrade from a superior/regular room.

Granted, the hotel isn't in the center of Shanghai, namely the Bund, or Nanjing Rd, or People's Square, or Pudong where all the ritzy high rises are, but it is only a few subway stops away from all these. Convenient enough, steps away from the hotel is a subway station for Line-4 and Line-10. Line-10 takes you to most of the tourist sites of Shanghai and the fare is up to 7 RMB. Also, a cab ride to the Bund costs but 20 RMB when traffic is good. The surroundings are residential. The main artery and the shopping boulevard of Hongkou District, the famed Sichuan Rd, is only three blocks west of the hotel. Being in the residential area has it own benefits of course – that is you can easily find good authentic restaurants well-known among locals for unbeatable low price.

The Premier King room is huge (roughly 500 SqFt) and comes with all the bells and whistles one can think of for a 5-star hotel. Although my room was not directly facing East (direction of Pudong) but south, the relatively high floor grants a nice view of the Pudong TV Tower (Pearl of the East) as well as the Hongkou neighborhood which a creek meanders through. To me, the most impressive feature has to be the spacious bathroom (the toilet is not in the bathroom but adjacent to it) that is equipped with a fancy mid-century-style claw-footed bathtub. Perfect for a long relaxing evening bath after checking out the city. Or one may opt for the shower that has the hand-held shower head as well as the hand-free over-the-head rain shower head. The bathroom is separated from the living/sleeping area by a glass wall, which could be romantic and/or mischievous. But when privacy is necessary, push of a button right by the bathroom door will bring the screen down to cover the glass wall. Real fun! The (cal-?) king bed is huge, comfy and bed linen soft to touch, assuring good rests when needed. At one corner, there is a large writing desk with all the in/out plugs for hi-tech gadgets. And the adjacent corner sits a comfy reading chair with an end table and ottoman, perfect for cozying up to read a book, watch TV or sip a glass of wine.

I didn't dine in the hotel restaurants so I won't be able to comment on the food or service. However, I totally enjoyed the gym and swimming pool located at the B1 level of the hotel, The gym is well-equipped and the pool is well-maintained with friendly attendants.

Finally but not lastly, the hotel front desk and the concierge were extremely helpful and highly efficient as well as friendly and courteous. During check-in, I was offered an upgrade to an Executive Suite for 350 RMB more, which included of course the Suite itself, daily breakfast, and the Club access as well as the afternoon cocktail. Although I didn't go for it, it may be considered added attractions for those who may enjoy these details. On the day of departure, I requested late check-out (4PM) as part of the gold level member benefits and my wish was quickly granted with most courtesy. Bravo!

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this Sheraton and I will definitely consider staying here next time when I visit Shanghai again.
