We stayed there 6 nights over New Years Eve and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Location: I read in some reviews that Pudong is commercial district and therefore a bit dull. I disagree. Its 10 mins or so easy stroll to the TV Tower (which you can't miss), underground is next to it that brings you in 5 mins to the other side of the river to the touristy areas. Superbrand Shopping mall is also close by (but more pricey than I expected). If you are happy to do short walks then the location is great withouth the hassle of dozens of Chinese tourist groups.

Service: Nice. Nothing to complain about, as we say in Germany.

Rooms: Yeah, could be a bit larger, but so could be Four Seasons in Munich. Very nice and large showers, comfortable beds. We booked the cheaper City view room, but asked for river view, so we got something in between which was nice. A bit disappointing was that although we put the Do not Disturb sign on still the cleaning staff bothered to ask whether we like our room done around 0800.

Eating: Don't really know. There are a handful or so restaurants in the hotel but I couldn't find a menu neither in the room nor in front of the restaurant so we didn't bother and went elsewhere. Highly recommend the branch of 'fresh element' restaurant at ground floor of Superbrand Mall.

Workout: The gym is small (perhaps 10 machines or so) but great view over the Bund as it is located on 30ies floor. Like the sauna and steam room, unfortunately woman strictly separated from men.

Drinks: Again nothing to complain about but to be honest? I clearly prefer Cloud 9 at Grand Hyatt, which is at I believe 80iest floor or so, so better view than Grand Melia's 30iest, which also have better cocktails at only slightly higher prices. To get to Cloud 9 walk confidently into Jin Mao Tower, go up to Hyatt Hotel, ask reception for lift to Cloud 9 who will guide you. Brilliant.

So in summary, great value for money. I recommend you stay in Gran Melia, take your drinks at Cloud 9 and have dinner in the City.

The pictures from their website don't lie, this is a beautiful hotel -- probably best looking I've ever been. Best all, it's a bargain. it's not in the main part of Shanghai, it's in the Pudong where there is plenty to walk to (TV tower, waterfront, Shanghai Tower). It's about seven minute walk to the subway. If you feel like taking a cab to go to particular place at night, it's very cheap. Having a rooftop pool was a major plus, great to relax after a long walking day and to refresh yourself before heading out for the great nightlife in the city. The single room was HUGE!. My bathroom had 3 rooms. Staff was great, they help me find particular areas I wanted to visit. Advice, stick to the free wifi in lobby and bypass breakfast. So much great food in Shanghai, you don't want to miss out.

We stayed at the Gran Melia Hotel in Shanghai in early December 2011. This seems to be the only Gran Melia Hotel in China, and it has a funny Chinese name that is quite difficult to remember. The hotel is situated right in the centre of Pudong (Commercial district) and is convenient for business and conferences. Moreover, the Pearl Tower is just 5 minutes away and it is also near the circular pedestrian walkway that leads to different famous sites such as the Huangpu river bank on the Pudong side. Great location.

The hotel is of five-star quality, and the rooms are large and comfortable. Our room had a view of the river but not the scenic part, so no beautiful lights at night! For a good view of the river you might need to ask for one beforehand.

The concierge was helpful especially in calling taxis. There was a good variety of food at the breakfast buffet and service was efficient on the whole.

It was a pleasant experience overall.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a good view

The hotel is excellent, luxurious, the staff was very helpful every time we needed. (We even bought train tickets to other cities through them with a fee of course but made everything easier). At the check in we requested a room with a nice view and got an upgrade for a room with a better view. Later in the room, the air conditioning didn't seem to work properly and the toilet was malfunctioning so they gave us another upgrade for an even better view and a bigger room.
The rooms are great, very clean, the windows are from floor to ceiling which allows you to enjoy the view even better. Very comfortable bed, all furniture new and you find everything you need in the room.
Only thing missed is wi-fi as they only have wired connection and as we had an ipad didn't work for us, but after requesting for it, they provided a modem for a fee. (12 pounds 24 hours)
The bathroom also great, gorgeous and very clean with everything you need.
The heated swimming pool is fantastic, it's located in the top floor so you have amazing views of the city.
They have 3 types of restaurants and we tried the Italian one for our Christmas eve, was really nice. Room service very nice as well.
The location is very good. There is a taxi line just outside the hotel. Walking distance from the Pearl Tower, the underground station and also a huge and great shopping centre where you can find everything, including very nice restaurants.
