Mingtown Jiangxi Rd. has overcome some of the unpleasant aspects of hostels but NOT ALL.
The good the bad and the ugly are:

The good: Great location near Bund, older restored building done is decent taste without too much hostel trash and paraphernalia that make most hostels part of the ugly. Good American breakfast, hot water, and clean shared baths. Bed linens good and beds a bit softer than typical Chinese hotels.Internet OK.

The bad: Staff seems fairly indifferent and just following orders. Did not receive the room I booked. No towels, unless you pay extra or have the most expensive room.Overpriced overall.

The ugly: a really stinky musty smell in the room that seemed to come from the AC unit. I could never decide if it was a bathroom smell, or a bad Chinese temple incense smell, or just the mold that afflicts this region or maybe a melange of the three.

Room Tip: I requested a single room with a large bed, which I did NOT receive upon arrival, given in- stead a...

This hostel was overpriced for what was provided -- my single room was dank and musty, the beds were uncomfortable, the bathroom was shared, and there was no window for 150 yuan per night (with the member discount). The same type of room (without the musty smell) cost only 110 yuan per night at Mingtown Nanjing Road (just a few blocks away). So after one night I switched and was MUCH happier at the other Mingtown (I booked a double for 180 per night to have a private bathroom, and it was super nice and spacious -- the same would have cost 240 at Mingtown Hiker).

This hostel was a great introduction to our time in China. The rooms were clean and modern. The shared bathroom facilities were always clean and really nice. Great location with two really cheap delicious food places right next door- hand pulled noodles being one speciality. The staff were friendly and always willing to give advice or information. The train ticketing place is only a few doors down, this was also handy.
But most importantly the hostel atmosphere was incredible, the cheap beer special helps with that too! We met lots of travellers here, some that we are still friends with!
Highly recommended!

We've stayed here for almost a week because everything was so good and pleasant that we didn't want to go away. The staff, friendly and always helpful, whatever you want to go in Shanghai, they always give you the directions and useful tips. The bathrooms, even shared, always cleaned and shining (I couldn't believe it with so many people staying, but there's a waitress cleaning it all the day). The dorm rooms have only 4 bed so you feel cosy and they are new and clean. Downstairs in the lobby, you have plenty of sofas and tables to chill out and chat with other foreigners. And the location, really central, few minutes from the sightseeing place in the Bund to see the Pudong Area. It was the best place we've been in almost 5 months traveling. We met so much people here from everywhere in the world and had dinner and went out together. It was like Erasmus experience ;) strongly recommend you to not miss this hostel at Shanghai.
