Mingtown Jiangxi Rd. has overcome some of the unpleasant aspects of hostels but NOT ALL.
The good the bad and the ugly are:
The good: Great location near Bund, older restored building done is decent taste without too much hostel trash and paraphernalia that make most hostels part of the ugly. Good American breakfast, hot water, and clean shared baths. Bed linens good and beds a bit softer than typical Chinese hotels.Internet OK.
The bad: Staff seems fairly indifferent and just following orders. Did not receive the room I booked. No towels, unless you pay extra or have the most expensive room.Overpriced overall.
The ugly: a really stinky musty smell in the room that seemed to come from the AC unit. I could never decide if it was a bathroom smell, or a bad Chinese temple incense smell, or just the mold that afflicts this region or maybe a melange of the three.
