On our way home from being out of town all day my husband and I stopped in Guin (14 miles from our hometown) to grab dinner. Quite honestly, we weren't very happy with our meal.
I ordered the Grilled Shrimp Fettuccine and it was so soupy I couldn't eat it. One would, literally , need a spoon. The mushrooms were rough chopped and weren't done. The few shrimp in the dish were all swimming in the runny sauce. It was all a bit off-putting although it had a decent taste. I poured it into a to-go box to recook at home.
My husband had their dinner special: Country Fried Chicken and Mashed Potatoes with a trip to their limited salad bar. He liked the chicken but couldn't eat the potatoes as they had a very strange taste. We thought perhaps it was due to the fake bacon bits that had been cooked into the mash.
After seeing wine labels such as Barefoot and other very low-end wines at the bar we both went with a mixed drink. Husband had a Manhattan (that was beautifully presented and he liked) and I had the Holiday Inn Iced Tea, a twist on a Long Island but with cranberry juice rather than cola. It was very bitter but, after I requested a bit more simple syrup, it was ok. I'm typically a wine drinker and rarely order a mixed drink because they tend to be too sweet so this was kind of odd.
Despite the meal, we had a nice time out together, and our waitress was friendly and observant. It was fun to be in a Marion County restaurant and actually order a drink. I think that was the best part of the experience. Yes, that was the first time we've eaten out in the area and had a drink. It was nice feeling like the county had entered the 21st century.
At the beginning of the evening we'd briefly discussed going back tomorrow evening for my husband's birthday dinner but decided to pass on their planned all-you-want shrimp bar. The restaurant did have some fun sounding dinner events coming up so maybe in future we'll give it another try. I'm very happy that Guin has such a nice facility. The hotel looked very welcoming and the furnishings in the areas we were in were modern and clean.
