Owner description: Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

“Great positive energy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

I am blessed that ,my office is present within the church premises. I was utterly surprised to find such a church in Chennai. It has an amazing architecture and somehow I get a lot of positive energy from this place. Importantly it has ample parking

Just be a bit careful while entering or exiting from the church as the main road has both side traffic. Ensure you are very careful

“Such a lovely building”

This is well worth a visit just to say you have been where St Thomas had been all those years ago. It's also a lovely building.

“Lovely architecture for a major historical homage in Chennai”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

Legend has it that Thomas the apostle came to Kerala, then Tamil Nadu, before his murder and. Urial in what is now Chennai. His name, St Thomas, has now lent itself to Santhome. As a final resting place of an apostle, it took the Catholic church centuries to acknowledge the heritage, but now Santhome is designated as a Basilica, e.g., final resting place for an apostle. No historian should leave Chennai without visiting this Basilica, as well as Little Mount. Santhome basilica has a peaceful atmosphere, and the crypt for Thomas is simple, quiet, perfect for a moment of reflection ina busy, noisy City of 7 million.
