Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel
Ranked #35 of 104 Hotels in Mysuru (Mysore)
Reviewed 31 March 2012

we stayed here for a night enroute to our trip to ooty. This hotel is a century old palace and probably the most beautiful palace. we had booked a pool wing room which has a view of chamundi hills. Rooms in this wing is average ( good for the price we paid). Service was fast and efficient. we had ordered for mid night surpise celebrations for our friend's birthday. it was exactly on time and more than what we expeted with a team of manager, waiters and chef all at our door step with cake..

Next moning we saw rooms in palace which are real charming and grand and I will come back with family for these rooms as these give ultimate romantic feel.

On negative side; hotel can improve a lot on exteriors and landcaping.

TIPS: Do not get fooled by advertisement of other palace hotels which are just regular hotel using "palace" name. In our case we saw advertisement of JP palace; but when we visited the hotel it was just a regular budget kind- a hotel; explanantion given its a city of palace so we named as JP palace. Anyway thanks to our driver who shown us Lalitha Mahal where we stayed at the same price.

we loved our stay...

Room Tip: Better viewinpool wing rooms

The palace itself is simply breathtaking, the views of the city are gorgeous. The hotel is government run so it could be so much better.
It doesn't really let you down because you are so enraptured by the property. But living in a grand palace, I would've liked more decadent luxury....
The staff is sweet enough, though not the most efficient. The food is nothing to write home about.
We had a lovely evening sitting in the bar, with a very friendly bartender.
The visiting crowds on Sunday crowded the hotel way too much, but they are restricted only to the public areas and restaurant.
I had a lovely weekend here, though I wish they would hand over the running of the hotel to a specialized hospitality company. We went and saw some of the grand suites, but didn't stay in them-they were something special.
The best part of this property is all the heritage and the original fittings in the rooms and specially the lift.
The potential to be the best in Mysore will be realized if the hotel is run by an oberoi or taj.

Words are not enough to desribe this property for its splendour, Opulence and the same goes to the indifferent management which calls this property as part of their ELITE hotels ! Spend just a night and then you will be left wondering (if this is an Elite hotel), god help the guests who check into the regular hotels of this group called ITDC !

The property is really imposing in its structure since this is the summer palace, built for the erstwhile late Maharajah of Mysore perched on top of a hill. You get breathtaking view of fully lit Mysore city in the night which is a treat to watch. They have a grand lift which is pretty regal, covered in silver and you can sit inside the lift on the mini royal sofa :-)

The nightmare unfolds the moment you enter the room. The rooms are pretty huge and airy with high roof cieling. But the cots wreak. I had booked a double room and the chaps give us a twin bedded room and then they join both the beds together while me and my partner stood and watched ! Pretty hilarious. The staff are always confused but curteous. They look so un involved.

Same is the condition of the restaurant. No doubt it is imposing but thats about it. It looks like its still basking in its past glory regardless of the present sorry state of affairs which it is in. The breakfast buffet is deplorable to say the least. My partner was stumped, shocked & dumb founded but thankfully didnt take me to task ! For that matter, am surprised and thank my stars that she some how doesnt chide me to this date on this property knowing the high standards she has kept in mind when it comes to her choice of hotels to stay !!

Never ever order room service if you dont have an hour and a half to spare and wait for it to be served in your room. We ordered a kettle of tea. It took one hour and ten minutes by the clock for the waiter to knock on our door ! And when I looked at him he was showing surprise on his face as to what has gone wrong ! And then I pointed at my watch and he just smiled and said sorry sir, it was a little late !!!!! One hour and ten minutes can be LITTLE, then I better stay shut !! He just brushed it off with a smile and was neither shocked, nor as indignant as I was. On the flip side, he was looking amused by the entire episode with a So What Look :-)

Hail ITDC. At times you will be sitting with utter disdain in your mind and keep debating to your self that - is this an intent to irk deliberately or is it total apathy. That dilemma is still hanging by the precipice ! I rate this property 10 out of 10 in terms of grandeur, historical value and the location. When it comes to the service and the way this beautiful property is being mis managed, you simply have to turn the scale the otherside to get the rating ! There it goes..nothing left to imagination :-)

Room Tip: Choose this hotel only to experience a piece of grand heritage and turn a blind eye for everything...

My husband and I stayed at Lalitha Castle Hotel a number of years ago. It is the REAL THING. The old castle has wonderful old world charm. Dinner was served in a large arena, a very nice area, and was delicious - vintage India with great spices! We loved it.

Because the rooms were on the expensive side for our wallets at the time, we chose a very small one, actually, a little too small, given the size of our suitcases that took a lot of space. Still, we loved the atmosphere of the place. It was worth it.

Do watch out for monkeys. They sometimes climb up the building (or, at least, they did when we were there - maybe things have changed by now - :) If you're not on a high enough story, you might find one looking in your window. :)

A delightful place - made us feel like we stepped into the majarat era once again.

We wanted to experience a Palace hotel in South India and chose the Lalith Mahal in Mysore. Although the facade was majestic and well maintained, the service was mediocre. Food was also not very good and they tended to have similar dishes every meal.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden view and lower floor, particularly for those who find stairs difficult, as there is...
