My wife and I spent four nights (Mon, 5/7 - Thu, 5/10) this last week at deservedly top-rated Garden of Eden ("GE") in Bocas Del Toro, our first visit to the Bocas area. GE recommended Bocas Sailing's ("BS's"), day excursion, and one of GE's staff, with years of experience in Bocas, called BS Monday in our presence and made reservations for us for Wednesday's sail. Great!
Tuesday morning my wife and I took a water taxi into Bocas Town to look around, saw what looked like BS's office (Bocas Town maps indicated BS's office was in a different location), went in, and were told by the woman there that she had no record of our reservation, and that Marcel had booked a private lesson for Wednesday, but would see if he could take us along. Were we confusing this place with the one GE had called?
Back at GE later that day, GE staff confirmed that we had had a firm reservation for Wednesday, but said that Marcel had apparently booked a private a day AFTER booking us, but still might be able to take us and advised us to show up for the cruise.
Wednesday, we showed up early for the cruise and were told that Marcel had a private (booked Tuesday!) and no room for us. A woman in another couple waiting there told us that on Monday she had also booked (in the office, with the same office manager) space for two on Wednesday's cruise (a birthday present for her husband) and was now being told by the same office manager that their reservation wasn't binding because they hadn't paid in advance (The woman passenger said no one had even offered her the opportunity to pay in advance, make a deposit, or anything similar).
I won't go into Marcel's excuses, blame-casting, etc., but, as far as he was concerned, it was everyone's fault but his, and he had no time for us.
Apparently, on Monday, BS had taken reservations for four passengers for Wednesday's cruise, and then gotten the chance to make more money on a private charter, and dumped us. They could have contacted us at GE by phone or email, but apparently didn't even bother.
Thanks, Marcel. Hope you made a lot on your private. We expect to be back to Bocas, but we sure won't be booking with you.

What a fabulous day! If you can only do one thing while you are in Bocas del Toro -- take the one day catamaran tour at Bocas Sailing!

Bocas is all about water and you can't really experience it's wonder without exploring it ON the water! There are water taxis and pangas zipping here and there, but there is nothing like a full day relaxing sail with plenty of time to see the sights, relax and just BE.

Bocas sailing gives a standard full day tour including lunch where you see mangroves, dolphin bay, and have two opportunities to snorkel and experience the colorful coral reefs and tropical fish. Some of the water in the area is not that deep and the catamaran can go where other boats cannot. We even had a visit from an indigenous young man in his dugout canoe who joined us for lunch.

Captain Harty was an excellent and knowledgeable host, sensitive to protecting the ecology of the archipelago and attentive to his group and their needs.

The Bocas Sailing office is on the water side of Main Street and you can also make reservations on their website.

Sea, sky, sun, wildlife -- this is what Bocas is all about!

Although I've lived in Bocas del Toro for about a year and a half, I've never had such a full day of experiences. Captain Harty (Hartmut Volberg) started the trip by letting us know where we would be sailing and stopping, and to warn us not to touch or disturb any of the wildlife or coral we were about to see. Our first snorkeling stop was like swimming through a million-dollar aquarium filled with corals of breathtaking color, sponges, stars and seagrasses, as well as amazing fish. Then, on to Dolphin Bay, where, unlike the many overpowered tourist lauches who chased the dolphins down, we approached slowly and quietly and had dolphins playing all around us. The second snorkel spot was quite unlike the first, and featured very large brain coral and tulip coral, as well as some amazing larger fish. Captain Harty provided all the snorkeling equipment for everyone, made a great lunch, and made sure everyone had a terrific time. He even brought two fishing rods out so that we could troll for mackerel while we were under sail. I would highly recommend this experience for anyone - even Bocas residents!

We had a private party of 8. Two of which were kids 4 & 6. We had a fantastic day. After an interesting start, we had a great time. Marcel was our captain for the day and he was beyond friendly and helpful. We got to pick our destinations, with help from Marcel and we were not diasappointed. I would highly recommend this sailing trip if you are in the Bocas area. It was by far my favorite day at Bocas.

The experience is great. We had dolphins playing around the boat, great snorkeling, rain and most of all amazing views.
Marcell is a good host that cares for his group and provides a great atmosphere.
Kids loved it all! Sandwiches and fruit provided were of good quality.
