This hotel is set off the beaten track and has many quirky features that make it a lovely place to stay. We were only here for one night and were upgraded to Lake view with 4 poster bed. All the rooms are different ours had bath on a set of steps. The room was littered with fresh flowers to welcome us which was lovely. The bar area had music to suit our tastes (50s and 60s) and a pool table along with large library of books. The whole place was laid back and friendly. Pool and garden area nicely done. Evening meal excellent and reasonably priced. The only downside were lots of flies despite lots of joss sticks burning. Little that can be done given the vegetation but use lots of repellent if you stay here.

My wife and I were due to be traveling on Christmas day so looked for somewhere special to dine. We were not disappointed, so much so, we went back the day after as well. Welcomed royally and shown around and escorted to the dining room, beautifully appointed, a very varied menu with some unexpected items, Beautifully cooked and elegantly served. I wish it was near us in the UK.

Room Tip: Try to get a lake view.

This hotel is situated a couple of kilometers inland from the busy, noisy and stuffy town of Hikkaduwa. But if you long for the beach or shopping or restaurants along the main road, where the traffic is horrible, a tuk-tuk will in a few minutes bring you there for 250 rupees. We were most of the time very content with the quiter beaches an the hotel's swimming pool, where we had very attentive service. If we needed a refreshing drink or someting to nibble between the excellent meals in the hotel's restaurant we were provided with small bells to attract the kind and smiling staff members.

The hotel has only five rooms but they are all spacious with nice beds which were every day decorated with fresh flowers. A minibar and a balcony added to the comfort, as did a good bathroom. where we only missed a moveable showerhead instead of the one stuck in the ceiling. The furniture is a bit on the heavy and dark side -- the climate and the overall holidaylazy atmosphere would be better matched with a lighter touch.

The food deserves some extra lines: The breakfast offered a lot of choices -- do not miss the wonderful fruit platter. Lunch and dinner were also fantastic -- the kitchen is very capable to serve lots of good tastes and the courses are a pleasure to the eyes as well as to the taste buds. Just ask if you want the courses to be more than just "tourist hot". We always got it as we prefere -- one on the mild side and the other a far hotter version. The battered shrimps and the choise of five different curries with rice, sauces and papadums are only two of the meals we ordered more than once. The restaurant is by far the best in Hikkaduwa -- good enough to attract lots of people not staying at the hotel. We only missed a broader wine list to be better able to match the wide range of yummy food so delicately served.

Tanya and Dale, the English couple who run the hotel/restautant, were obviously very concerned about the guests' welfare and provided all kinds of information and advice on trips and the best ways to enjoy Hikkaduwa and the countryside. The rest of the staff did their best to make the stay pleasant and amazingly relaxing. Our seven days were over all too soon.

The Asian Jewel ranks among our best memories of Sri Lanka.

Room Tip: The "Kingfisher" is a two bedroom suite with a very long, narrow balcony. The widest part in a corner is too hot for comfort.

Asian Jewel came highly recommended as some members of our family on holiday with us had stayed 3 previous times, enough said.
It's beautiful location and setting works in unison with short distance ( 5 mimute Tuk Tuk ride ) to access beach and local shops and bars.Tuk Tuk is a 3 wheeled local taxi.
Layout, comfort in rooms, cleanliness, food, local knowledge of staff and hotel pool all add up to a unique experience unrivalled elsewhere.
Food is a plenty and quality is of the highest standard, vast menu which catered easily to our varied needs( party of 10 adults,1 vegetarian).
All staff are available 24 hours and without doubt give first class service, nothing is to much trouble for them, even making a makeshift long handled net to retrieve our football!.
We just cannot recommend the Asian Jewel and staff highly enough.Dale and Tanya ( hotel proprietors/owners ) were as every bit as attentive as all staff, even organising day trips and activities for us,all of which were brilliant.
We felt completely relaxed within a few minutes of arriving and this feeling remained throughout our 2 week stay,we were sorry to leave and wished we could have stayed longer.
If you stay in Sri Lanka stay here,an absolute piece of paradise.
We have travelled to many places in the world but, without doubt we have found our very own "utopia".
We will definitely, absolutely no questions asked and certainly without hesitation be back to sample the delights of what Sri Lanka and The Asian Jewel have to offer...

My wife and I came out to Sri Lanka with some friends to enjoy a 16-night, 4-location tour of this beautiful country. We chose to stay 4 nights in each of:
Kandy, Tangalle, Hikkaduwa and Wadduwa.
The lowest- cost of these hotels were in Kandy and Wadduwa, the middle (twice the cost of the first 2) in Tangalle and the most expensive (twice the cost again of the Tangalle place) in Wadduwa. I have reviewed each on their respective merits, taking in to account the value based on the price.

Asian Jewel is a lovely hotel nested a couple of km from the beach and run by knowledgeable and friendly people and a great staff. The hotel itself is beginning to show its age a little but that is a purely cosmetic thing and certainly doesn't mar the experience.

The rooms are very comfortable and decently-sized with a good en-suite bathroom (and a nice powerful shower!).
The grounds house a decent swimming pool and sun-lounging area but as they are located so close to the excellent beach it isn't so important. Hikkaduwa is a buzzing place and the beach is great for both surfing and swimming. Lots of bars and cafes lend it an atmosphere we didn't experience anywhere else in Sri Lanka, and Asian Jewel offers the ideal location for enjoying all of this.

The food here is top-notch also, serving honest, fresh food every day from a good, varied menu. The breakfast omelets are essential for setting you up for a hard day's sunbathing!

Overall, AJ offers terrific value and I would heartily recommend it to anyone planning to stay in Hikkaduwa.

Room Tip: We were in 'Jasmine', which I would happily recommend.
