Really enjoyed our guided tour around by Jayanth. His enthusiasm and commitment to maintaining and developing this indigenous woodland is impressive and inspiring. If you have any interest in horticulture its a must do and is a nice contrast to the more formal gardens in Sri Lanka (which are also good to visit). If you are visiting Dambulla Caves its worth the extra effort to go here as well.

Take the time to visit this indigenous woodland. An evening tour is recommended although we took ours during the day with the very knowledgable Jayantha who now runs it on behalf of Sam Popham. It’s a truly peaceful haven and makes an excellent break from the busier, religious sites. You can ring ahead.

We read about this place in our guidebook as a place worth visiting if your in Dambulla and it definitely was. We called to book an evening tour on the same day without problem. Our great guides Poorna Tharaka and Rathnasiri took us out on a 1,5 hour walk to spot animals in the dark. We got to see loris, two types of deer, a wild cat, birds and frogs.

We did the the night time walk to see the grey slender loris, and it was utterly magical. With two guides we walked through the arboretum, past sleeping butterflies and a dozing hornbill. The guides were brilliant, and soon spotted a pair of Loris in the tree tops. Amazing to see these tiny creatures. We were lucky enough to then see three more in another tree. We also saw a number of different insects, some bats and a civet cat. It was a great experience and comes highly recommended.
