It's amazing that these salt mines have operated in essentially the same way since nearly 700 BC! We tasted the water from the natural spring and were amazed at how salty the water is where it comes out of the ground. Visually, it is a beautiful spot- and we purchased some of the salt to take home. Very cool experience!

Amazing salt mines... go early as it gets crowded, easy drive from Cusco. We enjoyed a guide who explained how the salt mines came to be. Gorgeous views of the Sacred Valley.

The structure, the way it is operated and the view are very interesting, especially as part of a day tour of the sacred valley. In western standards it is not completely safe (you can slip into a salt pond).

Our Guide advised that the Salt Terraces look different at different times of the year and we didn’t visit at the best time, but it was impressive nonetheless.
They are typically a bright white and reflect the sun. Worth a visit.

Very nice area, you can see workers extracting salt from the ponds without using any modern equipment. Amazing work done !
Tour may last about an hour, it does get very warm in the middle of the day, try to go early to avoid the many tourist excursions that arrive by the middle of the day. The parking lot is not very big, in the peak hours may be difficult to find a spot to park.
