“Best spot in town but choose your room carefully”
Reviewed 14 February 2011

How you feel about this hotel depends on what type of room you get. The rooms vary in quality, location and size. We stayed three nights. We had two different rooms. The night desk attendant was not particularly pleasant. We were shown another room initially - the only room they said they had left - but we refused. It was dismal. We got another room - which was acceptable - and the next day we got a larger, better room. All the rooms cost about the same - a llittle less than $50 a night - but varied greatly. We were there on a busy Peruvian holiday weekend. The hotel has the best setting in town. It is in a quiet area bordered by giant sand dunes. It is quite remarkable. The town was one of our favorite spots in Peru. Truly unique.

Likes:
-Lobby and pool area are very nice.
-Located on a quiet street with no cars. This is very important because the taxi drivers honk at anything that moves, no joke.
-The view of the dunes and oasis out the window was nice, though a little obscured by trees.

Dislikes:
-They turn the hot water off sometime before 8pm so don't expect a hot shower at the end of the day.
-Rooms are run down and a bit dirty. Our room had many spiders and the bathroom was covered with a 1cm layer of sand or dirt or something all over the toilet, sink, shelf. We had to clean the bathroom before using it.
-Staff speaks zero english so you need spanish
-Walls are very very thin and we heard our neighbors blowing their noses, experiencing various other bodily functions, and watching loud tv.

Hosteria Suiza is at the very end of the Laguna Huacachina, which means you're away from all the noise and music (especially on weekends). We got a room (#12) for $55, breakfast included. Room was somewhat small and the furniture was a bit old. The bed was ok, but not great. Fine for one night, but I wouldn't have liked to stay there for more than a few days (I like harder beds... the mattress was a bit too soft and the pillows too thin). Our room had a small balcony overlooking the lagoon, we didn't use it much but it was nice to have.

The room had no AC, just one small fan. It was fine, but not ideal.... we were concerned about some of the bottles of wine we had in the room (it did get warm in the room in the afternoon... especially since there was only 1 window (the balcony) and we kept it closed for security reasons).

Towels were a bit old (thin, rough), but they seemed clean. Bathroom overall was old, but spacious and everything worked well (clean too).

Breakfast was great (american breakfast.... amazing bread, butter, jam, eggs made to order, and incredible fresh coffee), served in the garden right by the pool where we had an amazing view of the dunes.

There seemed to be newer rooms towards the back, right by the pool (maybe the larger, family rooms?)... if I were to come again, I would probably ask about those.

We didn't have internet access, but I did see two computers down by the lobby (they were off, though). To be fair we didn't ask either.... it seems as though there may be wifi or working computers during the high season (we were one of 2 couples in the hotel... not very high occupancy).

There are a few parking spots inside the hotel, which was nice for us (we parked inside).

Overall we were very happy with the hotel... we cared about the location and didn't mind it being a bit dated (most places in Huacachina and Ica in general will be on the older side). Good experience.

The room was nice. Beds and bathroom were fine. Especially the pool was great. Unfortunately the (friendly) staff could not speak any other language than Spanish, so for information and tours we went somewhere else. We could leave our backpacks in the hotel after we checked out until we left Huacachina to go tho our nightbus. Internet was available, but quite slow.

Fantastic place to stay in Huacachina. Right on the edge of the oasis and had a room which overlooked the oasis with the huge sand dune behind., Fantastic garden with swimming pool and loads of sunbeds to relax on., Sorry we could not stay longer as Huacachina is a great place to relax and enjoy the lovely blue skies and sun. Did a great tour ot the wineries especially Lasso which was ancient and an incredible experience. Tries loads of Piscos and bought 2 bottles of the pure one. Sand buggying is a must also. Did everything with the youth hostel and also ate there every night - great food and atmosphere.
