“The Only Hotel with Swimming Pool in Sandakan”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2012

One of the best hotel in Sadakan known as the Sabah Hotel, located just a short distance of 5 minutes away from town. Sabah Hotel is known to be the only hotel in Sandakan to have a swimming pool! The place is relaxing, quiet and with excellent service. I stayed in the Exective Parlour floor. The room is very spacious.

Room Tip: The room is very spacious.

I took a road trip from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan and stayed in the Jr. Suite at this hotel. The room as spacious and provided a huge king size bed. That said, it was pretty dated. The TV was small for the distance from the bed, which made it a bit hard to watch. The balcony had plenty of room and provided a nice view over the forest area. The hotel is located a bit out from the town centre, but honestly, it is not the best town centre in Sabah. The food in the restaurant is decent, and there is a nice pool downstairs.

Having arrived at hotel late afternoon I was told breakfast was not included and would have to pay another Rm 30 a night per person extra total of Rm 360 for 4 night stay for 3 of us this was later reduced down to Rm21 night when i complained that i was sure it was included.

I was sure the breakfast was included but was to hot and tired to argue about it at that point and just agreed, but later i found the receipt that said breakfast was included and they reluctantly agreed to provide free of charge after all the hassle over the breakfast it all seemed pointless the next morning when we went to breakfast half of the international dishes were empty and the choice was very limited leaving only a choice of various rice, noodle and Asian dishes to choose from i don't mind Asian food my wife is Asian so i eat quite a bit of it but the quality was pretty low to say the least.

When i asked if the international dishes were going to be refilled they said yes but we were in the restaurant for over 45 mins and nothing appeared the same thing happened the following day all bar one and that was because we arrived early the other days were there around 9:15 am and they finish breakfast at 10:30 so obviously nothing gets replenished after 9am.

when my friend complained to the desk about it he was told they know about it because other people had also complained about it in the past but the management had not done anything about it my friend was given a small basket of fruit to compensate don't know what the breakfast was like on the last morning i never even bothered to turn up just not worth it.

On a more positive note the room service, cleaning, pool and facilities were good and the lobby food & drink service was excellent with various fresh breads and a good choice of cakes and pastries but best of all was a young waitress called Lisa who was the most charming helpful young person you could want to meet.

Maybe the Hotel management should take a training course from young Lisa on how to deliver a good service.

Very friendly and helpful staff as everywhere in Malaysia, the pool area was nice and the hotel is in an excellent location, but our room (indeed the hotel generally) was looking a little jaded. It actually felt quite damp and musty, and the bathroom needed some attention. Carpets in the tropics are a questionable choice, wooden floors or tiles (or moveable rugs) would surely suit the humid climate better ? The ones in the hotel here felt old, damp and scruffy.

Although the staff were generally very helpful, especially at Reception, I did not think the service in the restauarant was very attentive, you had to seek people out to ask for drinks.

It's still quite a nice hotel, but it needs freshening up !

We spent three nights in interconnecting rooms. The accommodation is ok - it could be better without the stained carpets anyhow the bathrooms and bed sheets were very clean. The pool area is great and our kids loved it. The breakfast is good but the restaurant smells of fish-oyster-soy sauce so eat outside. The staff are helpful despite other comments. Not bad but this place may struggle when the new Sheraton is open in May.

Room Tip: Modern wing with pool view and non smoking
