“The island is a paradise, not the resort.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 March 2012

It seems that the owner of this resort do everything to get so much money as possible with so less service as possible. Bad management. Do not believe the brochure.

This is the island to be if you like crystal clear seawater, white sandy beaches and the Robinson Crusoe experience. There are 3 lagoons or coves to swim from with colourful and abundant marine life. The corals by the beach are mostly dead but there is an effort to revive them with artificial reefs. Although there's only 1 restaurant, the Thai food was excellent and not extremely pricey. Access to the resort is very easy from Koh Samui with twice daily high speed catamaran departures. The journey only takes 2 hours and if you don't mind forking out and extra 100 baht per way, you can opt to sit in air-conditioned comfort situated mid deck. The staff especially Sarah and Jar from reception and the restaurant staff were extremely helpful and made our stay truly pleasant. Wifi is gratis for in-house guest and the connection can be erratic at best from the rooms. Better connection in the reception area. From 10am onwards, many day trippers who come in from surrounding islands and the atmosphere of this peaceful retreat morphs into a mini Ibiza. It is sad to see the amount of trash they sometimes leave behind. Most of the day trippers leave around 3pm for the island to regain its tranquility. This is not a luxury resort but the location and overall ambience combined with fair prices make the resort an excellent choice if you want to get away from it all, and if you want to experience down-to-earth and charming Thai hospitality. Will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Bungalow D12 is right on the beach

Our previous stay on this once unspoilt paradise was four years ago. The only boat of tourists was between 10am and 3pm and then after that, guests had the island to themselves. Mats and small tables were put out to enjoy cocktails while the sun was setting, the food was good, the price affordable and the location, perfect. Oh how 4 years can make a difference. What was once run by an Australian couple now seems to be run by a major high speed catamaran company. More accommodation has been added, putting a serious strain on the electrical supply of the island. Boatloads of tourists start arriving very early and don't leave until the sun has almost set. Much of the coral has been destroyed and the water is overcrowded with snorkelling and diving groups. You have to be quick to get a chair and umbrella and the beach now resembles an overcrowded beach scene from spain. We had the worst pad thai which was just a gluggy mound on my plate and in general the food was really not good. The staff were not overly friendly either. We also noticed that the sands have shifted and guests staying on one of the islands now have to wade through water to get to thier rooms. If you are quick you may still get to see the few lovely fish that still inhabit the waters and the siamese cats that live on the island are also very friendly. We had one make itself at home in our room which was pretty cool. In short, very dissappointed. A paradise has certainly been ruined in the name of the tourist dollar.

Room Tip: K9 room has the best view, but you need to be fit to climb all the stairs that lead to it.

I guess I should have taken the reviews hereore seriously. I read about the horrible experiences people had, but to experience it first hand was something else. I'll sharer experience here jn hope that no one will have to go through this. Again.

The island was recommended to me by the agent claiming it to be Thai's best island!! Judging from the pic, you have no reason to doubt that. I paid 2000 baht for an AC standard room with no hot showers (that's about 70USD... and relative to everything else in Thailand... That's expensive!). I thought for a paradise island... Why not? Big mistake! We spent a sleepless night there... And here's why.

Apparently, the manager created a 'class system' on the island. If you live on the west island (where the deluxe bungalows are), you'll be treated like king's and Queen's. Whereas if you are on the east island, you are like a second-class citizen to the managerial group. It was the first time I booked a resort but still have to pay for the towels! However, guests from the west island have their towels included in the rooms. Even when comes to selecting DVDs, guests from the west island have the priority. Honestly, I've never been treated so unkindly by a hotel staff before. Also, if you live on the east side, prepare to get wet everytime you get to the main island! It wasn't very pleasant at all to sit there at the dinner table soaking wet from waist down. As for the food... Mediocre at best and definitely overpriced! Now to the room... It was basic alright (see pictures)... The room was small and compact... The AC didn't work at all... The mattress was the hardest I've slept on... And the toilet area smelled like a sewer... To top it off: bugs, bugs, bugs! Cockroaches were crawling out of the hole next to the toilet with ants and mosquitoes coming in and out of your 500-sqft room... 70 bucks for this?!

The last straw for me was the safety... Or the lack there of for guests living on the east island. The water was up to your chest during high tides and down to your knees in low tides. The workers told me that we will be transported by a boat at night. But there was no boat and no LIGHTS at night. With the rushing current... I didn't even know where to start crossing... There were rocks, bridges, and stairs on the other side of the island and you can't see them. One of the worker told me that the manager don't usually visit this side of the island and hence there are no lightings. Someone could have easily slipped from the rocks or bang their heads on the bridge (because it was built so low). When confronted why there was no boat, the receptionist said in a very condescending way that she could ask one of the workers to carry us across the river, then she laughed.

The beach was a dissapointment as well... Filled with dead corals, it was hard to walk bare foot in and across the water. As for snorkeling, there were fish... And water was clear. But when I booked a snorkeling tour from the island, they took me back to Koh Tao's lighthouse bay to do it... which has a much better corals and wider variety of fish.

In conclusion: Do NOT buy into the hypes or pictures... If you are curious... Do a day trip from Koh Tao before committing to the booking. Check the rooms to see if it's up to your standards... And check which side of the island your room is located. Or my suggestion-take your money somewhere else where you be treated like a guest. Hope this helps!

This is the one place that both my wife and I wish we had spent more time!

We stayed in a bungalow right on the beach. We had both A/C and hot water which worked great. Those expecting a luxury resort will be disappointed! What makes this place so special is the amazing scenery, and access to world class dive sites. Our room was very clean, always had fresh cold water, and cheap mini-bar Singha.

We had a quiet, private view unlike anything we could imagine. This island may very well be the most beautiful place on earth. The snorkeling right off the beach rivals anything I have seen in the Caribbean or the Hawaiian islands.

The breakfasts and dinners were pretty tasty, and reasonably priced. The fresh drinks on the beach were top notch!

This is a scuba divers paradise. The dive shop and crew were happy to teach you what you needed to know, and were very concerned with safety.

I hope I can come back one day!!

Room Tip: Just relax.......
