“Great stay, friendly management”
Reviewed 22 November 2011

We discovered Mook Lanta by chance, having decided to switch hotels to be closer to the beach (we began our stay on Koh Lanta in the town of Saladan). After visiting a couple of hotels in the Long Beach area, we stumbled across Mook Lanta and its friendly, funny and personable manager Chai. If you're looking for a place right on the beach, this is not the place for you. The beach is technically only 2 mins away but it's a rocky section of Long Beach which means you need to walk another 5-10 mins for the white sandy beach. That said, for us, the location was good: in between the beach and the main road, in a quiet lush garden - the owners have done a great job of building the bungalows around the natural beauty of the area. The garden of palm trees, banana trees and tropical flowers.

There are 2 types of bungalow both built on stilts above the watery garden - the more traditional, rustic bamboo bungalows with fan (less expensive and too dark for our liking) and the concrete bungalows with A/C, satellite TV, big windows leading on to a balcony, and a quirky outdoor shower. We went for the latter and ended up spending 8 nights here when we only planned to spend 2.

The rooms are designed with some style (for the price range), they are pretty clean, plus the balcony facing the lush interior garden, and the large outdoor shower are nice features.

The bed is a good size, not too hard, with decent sheets.

We only at breakfast here once and it was fine: the usual eggs, toast, ham and fruit, plus tea/coffee and juices. As far as eating options go there isn't a restaurant in the hotel, but it doesn't matter given all of the great options on the main road within 5 mins walk.

It's worth noting that we've been backpacking for several months and therefore we don't critique our accomodation with the same eyes as we would if we were on a short holiday. So our only complaints with the hotel are that we had ants in our room on 2 occasions (which is pretty normal in the tropics), but the manager took care of it promptly each time.

For us, one of the biggest assets of Mook Lanta is it's manager Chai. Not only is he super friendly and fun - a real character! - but he's also very knowledgeable about Koh Lanta and can help book anything you may need on your trip (motobikes, cooking classes, transport, etc) at a reasonable price (i.e without adding a huge commission).

We would definitely come back.

Room Tip: If you are able to negotiate and pay less then the rack rate (as we did) it is great value for money...

This is a lovely resort with efficient and friendly service. Ther rooms are really lovely and the aircon ones have a lovely outside shower, which has hot water. The only downside I can say about this place is that there is a nearby beach bar which has a party once a week during peak/high season, and you can hear the music in the room - the party doesn't end till about 4 - 5am. Every other night was peaceful and relaxing. A nice balcony facing a lovely garden, only five minutes walk to the beach.

We stayed in January in big bungalow with 2 separate rooms and a shared entrance. The bungalow is very nice. Rooms are comfortable and very clean. The shower is just outside and you have a nice view on palm trees when you are showering. There is also a nice balcony to have a cold beer at sunset.
I don't understand people rating this hotel so badly. It is never said that this hotel as a swimming pool on their web site! and even if the pictures look maybe too nice on their website, everybody do like this.
The beach is not so crappy, but if you walk 5 min direction south, there is another resort (more expensive) which have an incredible beach with wonderufl sunset and a nice restaurant. Is it so diificult to walk a little bit?
Staff were correct with us. They provided us motorbike when we asked them at reasonable price.

Our original plan was to visit Ko Lanta for 4 days. We had such a great time that we extended our stay for a bit. The island is beautiful, it is even during peak season not too busy, the people are friendly, the beaches are great and the food is delicious.

We stayed in Mook Lanta resort, which was absolutely fantastic. The rooms are spacious and well maintained, the staff is friendly and the hotel is situated close to the beach. We rented a motorbike at the hotel, and made bookings for daytrips at the hotel as well. The good thing is that they just give you a reasonable price, so you don't have to bargain on everything. The host is most friendly and does whatever he can to make you feel at home. We would recommend this place to everybody!

I decided to read the reviews that were already written before writing mine, and I was completely shocked. I don't recognince the description of either the staff or the resport. My friends and I are still saying how much we loved mook lanta, inculding the staff! The surroundings are beautifull, loved walking through the resort to our room. The rooms have airconditioning, a refridgerator and a balcony. We were impressed over how clean the rooms were. Of course it could be closer to the beach, but most people manage to walk 3 minutes to the beach. We also rented motorbikes from the resort for 250 baht for 24 hours to see other parts of the island. The restaurant at the resort is ok, breakfast is great and the other restaurants nearby are fantastic.

The staff were the friendliest people I've ever met, without it appering fake. we arranged different trips trough the resort (diving, snorkling, elephant-rides) and they were more than helpful. We also got to use the internet in the office for free. We also got to use a nearby pool.

I'm sad to see that other guest have so different experiences from us. I love Mook Lanta and would absolutely recomend staying there.
