The IHCL has created the brand “Taj” and has transpired it to a feeling, “Tajness … you can feel it with your eyes closed”. This, I agree about the Taj brand. Thus, I cannot fathom why is the brand “Taj” associated with this hotel. The “Taj” brand is marketed with the line / slogan “years spent perfecting a craft, decades spent acquiring a reputation”. Well IHCL, your association with this hotel is just flushing the decades of reputation down the drain. None of the Taj hotels have ever come as a shock to me, but then there is always a first. This hotel completely missed out on “Tajness” and did not even come close to the finesse of the Taj hotels.

The fact that I have written such a long review is not for my love of writing but rather out of the sheer aghast at the fact that the “Taj” brand has an alliance to this hotel.

Review:

Room – Was welcomed to the sight of balloons on the bed. However, was terribly disappointed by the lack of hygiene. The side of the bed had dust / foot marks on them (refer picture). The couch had stains of things I never want to know. The kettle in the room was dirty inside. When we re-entered the room in the evening, it smelt awful. The house keeping came in and agreed to this fact. He could not trace the source of the stench but tried to rectify it by using an air freshener. I am yet appalled at the thought that a premier hotel room could even smell that ghastly and dread knowing what could have been the reason.

The air-conditioning had a mind of its own. It kept alternating between staying on and off, no human intervention required. We woke up to a hot morning in the room in an already hot Nashik.

Bathroom – Absolute disgrace! The moment we entered the bathroom floor was completely dirty. The attached pictures are after the housekeeping addressed the situation and yet show the extent of dirt that was there on the floor prior the clean-up. Just not acceptable!

Shower – There were only two outlets, one was a tap to wash your feet and the other a shower meant to aim and injure. Please peruse the attached picture to understand the rays of water being shot out of the shower. Lowering the speed of the water also did not help. One literally has to aim to avoid being hit in the eye (or another sensitive spot) and land up yelping in pain. Why would they not keep a shower with an adjustable head, I fail to understand.

Breakfast – The wait … oh one must keep waiting and waiting for 25 minutes at least. I have visited Taj properties on rush days, but none have ever kept us waiting this long. But wait again, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. You are welcomed to cutlery which have remainders of soap suds on them. I wish this was a one-off issue, but sadly not. Several juice glasses, forks, spoons, etc. were unkempt. There seemed to be a lot of staff under training. If you happen to ask someone for a clean fork, you can just forget about seeing that person altogether. The service of dosas, eggs, etc. was appalling. There were guests who walked up to the counter to remind the cook of the order and eventually volunteer to make the food themselves. If the order did come at all, you can find the chutney missing or probably pancakes instead of dosa (true story).

I understand that the property is under renovation but none of the above are acceptable by any standards. You may restrict the areas under repair but never the quality of services. There were several people complaining about the dismal services even at the reception. Did not help that they added charges for services / goods not used by various guests, the rectification of which delayed billing during check out (escape). Needless to say, this is not a “Taj” property and not a property we would ever visit again. So saddened.

Gateway Hotel from the Taj group of hotels gives a palatial feel as you enter the premise. But frankly the interiors of the hotel can be compared to any good reputed 3 star hotels. It is definitely not bad but does not give you the Taj feel. Even incase of rooms apart from the suites none of the bathroom have the bathtub. Also we had called for an extra bed at around 9.30 PM and we made the second call at 10.40PM and finally the bed arrived at 11PM (when we all were almost asleep). So not too happy with the housekeeping service.

Now coming to the positives: They have a great spread of breakfast in terms of variety and taste as well. Great staff as well. They also have a huge swimming pool and few indoor games. A nice lawn by the pool with swings all around. Gives you a good feel.

One more excellent service that they offer - they give you a complimentary voucher to the in-house guests for the Sulla, Suma and York vineyard tours.

Overall a good staycation.

Room Tip: Do not forget to grab your complimentary vineyard tour vouchers

Though I had some difficulty at the check in due to documentation formalities, the check in was smoothly handled. The hotel is inside the Ambad MIDC but its an oasis. Large acreage, trees in abundance and at a height above the rest of the city.

The rooms are huge and the bathrooms are very nicely designed. We had two twin rooms and there was ample of space beyond the beds to accommodate 4 of us which we sat and chatted in one room.

The room service was prompt and the food was excellent. The verandahs overlooking the hills and the poolside were magnificent. A true feeling of luxury.

Traveled with family in December. It was lovely decorated for christmas. The property is beautiful and located pretty close to the center, yet offers a good feel of isolation from the city buzz. Its buffets offer a wide variety of food and is tasty.Rooms are clean, although the standard rooms are bit smaller so if travelling with child would recommend the bigger rooms. Overall a good experience! The upper rooms will afford better privacy.

Room Tip: The standard rooms are small. Beds are queen size. If traveling with child would recommend booking higher range rooms.
