Our family just spent a wonderful week at Anthony's Key Resort. Before you go to Roatan you must remember that Honduras is a poor country so if you want the Ritz go to the Virgin Islands...but if you want to truly experience a true Caribbean island the way it should be (not over commercialized) then Roatan is the place for you.

Airport/Arrival: When we arrived to Roatan AKR had representatives waiting for us to get our bags and shuttle us to the resort. We checked in and received an overview of the resort and received lunch. Our luggage was taken to the key and waiting for us outside our door.

Rooms: We had 2 Key Superior rooms that were very spacious and clean with wonderful decks overlooking the water...a wonderful place to relax and have coffee in the morning or an afternoon cocktail. Also a great place to hang up wet clothes/towels to dry. There was a water hose outside the front door that was great for washing off the sand before going into your room. The AC worked and the beds were very comfortable.

Diving: The dive operation at AKR is excellent. We were assigned a boat that we stayed on the entire week and the sites were coordinated for the week. It was very well organized!! Our captain Rupert and Dive Master Mark were great. I've read about the lack of safety from other posters here but I didn't find that. Most divers that come to AKR don't need to be reminded of buddy procedures and should already know them (most buddies have their own way of signaling each other)...otherwise you might want to take a refresher dive course before you come. They allowed us to explore while still keeping an eye on us and not hovering over us. A lot of the dive sites were within a 5 minute boat ride. I thought the reef looked much better than Belize or Cozumel and the colors were so beautiful. Lots of fish and I enjoyed the 2 reck dives. I got 6 days of diving and 15 dives which I thought was an outstanding value for the money!! I even missed 2 dives & the shore dive!!!!

Food: We found the food very satisfying. Breakfast was a wonderful buffet of fresh fruit and pastries. Plus you could also order anything off the menu (local favorites, eggs, panckakes, bacon, hashbrowns, etc.). What more would you need? Lunch and dinner were also good and the fish and meat were very fresh. I enjoyed the meals they had on the key very much. We ate out one night and actually wished we had just stayed at the resort. They also had a kid's menu (grilled cheese, pasta, etc.). It was more than enough food to keep you full!!

Other attractions: We came with our kids and other family members that did not dive. They had enough to entertain them without ever having to leave AKR. The Dolphin experience/snorkle was great. They could also hop 2 snorkle boats a day without having to sign up since it was included in our package. They loved the kayaks, shore snorkeling, trip to Fins & Flippers island and horseback riding. All this was included in the package...what an outstanding value!! They didn't even use the pool.
Bugs: Yes the noseums were not fun...just put on bug spray before you go out of the room. If we got some bites we took Benedryl at bedtime & they were usually gone by the morning. It's definitely not as bad as I thought it would have been.

Overall: AKR is a great value for the money and there is more than enough to do for divers and non divers alike. You didn't need to carry around cash which is nice. There was no pressure to tip but of course you want to tip the great service you get (from the waiters, dive masters/captain, front desk to the guys that shuttle you in the boat to the key). It may seem like a lot but you would probably spend more if you tipped as you went along.

The people of Honduras are very friendly and proud of their country. I hope their current political situation calms down soon so we can continue to visit and support them with our tourism dollars. Roatan is truly a hidden gem!!

Still at AKR but am departing tomorrow. So while it's all top of mind, just wanted to drop a few notes about it. The diving was great. Even though the resort is full, the divers are spread out over several large diving boats so it never felt crowded. The viz was over 100ft and water temp over 80 deg(F) and there was a lot to see. Spotted an eagle ray, some stringrays, turtles, toadfish, a couple of seahorses, a nurse shark, a couple octopus, billions of big groupers and the usual array of small critters.
My son is in dolphin camp and the program is top notch. He loved every minute of it. The scheduled activities give parents the freedom to dive and they even have movie nite on night dive days.
The rooms are nice. We are on the key over the water with air conditioning. We had some big red ants inside almost every night and saw a roach or two, but for living this close to nature, I guess we can live with it. The rooms are not posh hotel digs...the beds could be bigger, linens a little softer...etc. but for a dive resort, it works.
The food is really quite good. I saw other reviewers complaining about the food, but my family enjoyed every meal. There is a charge for alcohol and sodas but they charge a reasonable amount....$6/$7 for cocktails, $6 wine, $1.50 sodas....nothing like the charges U.S. hotels levy for those things so it's easy to live with.
Generally the service was very good. Hit a couple rough spots, but that seemed to be more about that person at that time - in general the staff is very accommodating.
Did the shark and the dolphin dive....and both are highlights of the trip. Gotta do it! 3 dolphins...up close & personal in open water...they swam around us for 45 minutes and toward the end were looking to be petted...it was adorable. And at least a dozen beautiful grey reef sharks appeared on the shark dive. It was well run - not scary or threatening at all.
Tips:
-The weather forecast a week before departure said there would be rain & storms all week. It was gorgeous every day and rained maybe 5 minutes today. Not sure you can rely on those weather sites for this place.
-The coup happened just a few days into our trip. It has not really affected Roatan. There was a peaceful protest here on the island today but all the other activity has been on the mainland and it has not affected our trip at all.
- You can get a modem from the hotel front desk and use wi-fi for $50 for the week from the rooms even on the key - or you can pay $10 for 2 hours but you have to use the computers near the office.
- Deet. I didn't try Cactus Juice but my 20% deet works! No seeums look like ash falling from the sky. They don't hurt but they do leave big red marks and are here all day but very active dusk & dawn.

the pros: Great dive sites 5 minutes away, better ones 3 minutes away.
Easy on and off the island and the resort.
Super easy going staff. your wish is their desire
Informal, relaxing atmosphere with plenty of happy hour
Not to mention the food, WOW !
Great, new, private cabins
If there is a modern convenience they've forgotten, just wait, they'll have it
next year.
The Cons: Don't forget your bug spray

When I got home on July 2, I saw the news and was shocked that Honduras ousted their President. Who knew and who cared! Anthonys is fantastic and safe! Whatever you seek in a vacation can be found at this facility. I was looking for diving, food, friends, and leisure. I got much more! A special thanks to Mandy of Operations who worked behind the scenes to make everyone's trip awesome. To my dive master Calderon: thanks for the shark, and seahorses! Much love, Lynn

I have been to Anthony's Key a dozen times with friends and family. The have the best dive operations anywhere. Wonderful service and a completely safe environment. A lot to do even if you don't dive. During the summer they have a camp for kids -- dolphin camp which the adults would be thrilled to do. The Galindo family are the owners and they are at the resort making sure everything is top notch.
