Good food terrible service
My friends and I were really looking forward to eating at this very traditional looking restaurant with its live acoustic music. Of all the restaurants in Ohrid it looks like one of the better/ more expensive ones.
The food was for the most part really good! The chef is clearly talented what shame I can’t say the same for the waiting staff. We had a very cold reception right from the get go. There was no warm friendly small talk to break the ice as we had received at the other restaurants we had eaten at in town in fact not even as much of a smile.
We ordered wine and starters as well as our mains. The starters arrived after a few minutes, these were very tasty but quite large so we were quite surprised when the main courses also arrived around two minutes later, we were barely halfway through our starters so this made us feel very rushed.
I was also disappointed as I was trying carp for the first time and the dish I had ordered that was described as “pan fried fillets” actually turned out to be a battered cross section of carp with bones and spine included which was tricky to eat and quite dry.
My friends meals were all pretty good though and the sauce with their dishes were excellent!
What left a sour taste in our mouths was the service or lack of it. We asked for the wine list to order more wine but the waiter never came back to take this order and all the time we could see the couple on the table next to us having their wine topped up regularly by their waiter. Ours didn’t even come back to check our food was ok? Instead he loitered around awkwardly a couple of times which was just plain odd!
This was not a busy evening by any means it was a weeknight and there were only around 4 tables occupied in a restaurant of at least 12 tables.
I admit these are all minor points in the grand scheme of things but between feeling really rushed, the grumpy waiter and lack of wine it put a real dampner on our evening. Eventually I asked to speak to the owner to make him aware of the impression his staff were giving to his customers.
- [ ] After arguing (unsuccessfully) with me about the description of the carp on his menu. All he had to say was “sorry it will be better next time”. Sure will I thought as I will be eating elsewhere! As I settled the full bill a rather sheepish waiter offered us free coffee and cake but by that point it was so awkward we just wanted to leave so we declined!
Will not be visiting again! Much better more friendly restaurants down by the lakeside.
