Traveled to Ecuador in January as part of a group of approx 30 veterinary doctors and nurses to provide animal care to the Otavalo communities. We were so very blessed to stay at Casa Mojanda. The experience there was exceptional - the rooms were beautiful, clean and comfortable and Ana Maria and her staff of angels took such great care of us! The nights were cold, but the fireplaces were lit by the staff each evening. The views were beautiful - up the hill from town, which in my opinion was not a bad thing. We were able to easily get to town by walking and then taking a taxi (inexpensive) home. I cannot say enough good things about the food. The ladies in the kitchen prepared the most wonderful meals and handled any special requests (ie vegan, etc) with ease. Each meal was authentic and simple, really good food. The grounds were well kept - I had a nice late afternoon in the hot-tub (wooden-Japanese style) and enjoyed the quiet solitude. There is a very nice library in a separate building as well as good internet throughout the property.
Overall, a wonderful, positive experience. I can't wait to return on my next trip to Ecuador.

Casa Mojanda is like no other place in in the region. The accommodations are beautiful and meticulously maintained. The food is fantastic and cooked and served with love by the wonderful women who work there. This is a great location to explore the Andes and the wonderful towns of Otavalo, Cotacachi and Ibarra. If you are looking for deluxe living in an authentic environment this is the place to stay!

The hotel's website is well-made and the hotel looks certainly better than it is. Do not expect any form of luxury here. I am trying to write this review as honest as possible, with due respect to strengths and weaknesses.

STRENGTHS:

- In Otavalo, there is not much choice of good hotels. And, in fact, you do not really want to stay overnight in a town that is full of pickpockets already at daytime. So, a hotel on the countryside looks tempting indeed.

- The hotel is in a quiet country location. The air is filled with the smells of cattle and horses, and the grounds are spacious.

- The main building is like a small museum: very nice architecture with historical looks and full of antique furniture, precolumbian archeology, music instruments and African masks.

- The hotel manager, Ana Maria (in fact, the owner's sister) is very charming and helpful.

- The rooms are nicely decorated with rugs and other traditional decorations.

WEAKNESSES:

- The hotel is 3.8 km from Otavalo, this means, you either need a car or you have to rely on taxis. For dinner, you would like to stay at the hotel.

- The hotel is located on the slope of a mountain. It is often cloudy, chilly or even rainy up there, even if the valley is sunny and warm. Also the nights are freezing cold. The fireplaces do not really help, since you cannot keep them burning all night and the tiny electric radiators do not provide enough warmth.

- The beds are ridiculously small. Since the nights are cold and you need four (!) blankets (really!), this will affect the quality of sleep badly. Some guests would sleep with only one person in the "double" bed while the partner slept in a bunkbed.

- The cabins are very rustic and sparsely equipped. The bathrooms are very basic, more hostal-style.

- It is very tricky to get hot water out of the shower. It requires quite a bit of adjustment and often enough you find yourself under an ice-cold spray of water.

- The food is really poor. At breakfast, they do not even manage to prepare fried eggs with soft yolks. For dinner, there is no choice of food. On our first evening, we got a pretty mediocre vegetarian meal, on our second evening rather bland tilapia. In fact, the worst food we ever got in Ecuador. Good for losing some weight.

- The hot tub could be very nice, given that you quickly get cold on the mountain slope, but the water is way too hot (43°C/110F) and the gardener, who is in charge of the tub, refuses to add enough cold water to adjust the temperature. As a result, the hot tub is rarely used.

- The hotel's price policy is annoying. The rates are pretty steep for that what they offer, the wines are much more expensive than in other (and better) Ecuadorian hotels and restaurants. And when you want to pay with credit card, they charge another 4.5 per cent.

CONCLUSION:

If you are expecting a luxury country resort, you are certainly wrong here. The hotel is very basic, more on the level of a cheap hostel (at least food, heating, beds and bathrooms), but has luxury hotel rates. Next time, I would rather stay near Quito Airport (e.g. at San Jose de Puembo) and drive to Otavalo (the market does not really start before 10:30 a.m.).

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a larger double bed

We stayed two nights and we loved the atmosphere and the individuality of the rooms. The library is very charming and full of old books and treasures. We didn't encounter any problems with the humans or the dogs but had a lovely evening of good food (veggie options) and conversation with our fellow guests. The log fire in the room added to the cosy atmosphere and the views from our room were amazing.

This hotel is in an absolutely gorgeous location! Unfortunately, the road to the hotel is extremely rough and many cabs would not travel there. My friends had a reservation there and 4 of us did not. We figured we'd see if they have rooms and if not we'd go somewhere else in town. Our driver called to get directions and the manager's husband could not give the driver directions. Instead he questioned my friend about why she wasn't using the map he had emailed (we had no wifi and no way to pull up her email). Upon arrival we were chastised for not calling ahead. But, my friend was the only guest and all the other rooms were empty. We were shuttled to the dining room and served a nice simple meal of pasta, bread, and salad. We did not request dinner and wrongly assumed it was included. We learned upon check-out that we were each charged $20 for what should have cost $5. Vincent then told us our bags were in a group room. I explained that I wanted a separate room with my partner and he huffed and acted very put out. I would have expected him to explain the room options instead of assuming that 4 grown adults all wanted to share the same bedroom (and 1 bathroom). The breakfast was cooked to order and included in the price of the room. The women who served breakfast were all very kind and the food was decent. The rooms were clean and tastefully decorated. The beds were a bit hard but decent. The manager and her husband smoke in the kitchen and you can smell cigarettes while dining. The other big surprise is the 10% service charge added to the room. This hotel is 2-3 more expensive than other hotels in the area. While it is in a beautiful location, I would suggest you stay in town and travel upland for a day hike. Save your money and stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

CasaMojanda, General Manager at Casa Mojanda, responded to this reviewResponded 14 February 2018

Dear Mrs. Newman,
We are very sorry that you left Casa Mojanda feeling that way and we regret any misunderstandings that may have led to it, since Casa Mojanda is actually known and widely recognized precisely by the service we provide to all guests. We also regret that you only voiced your complaints at the very moment of checkout and not during your three night stay. Please believe us when we say that we truly apologize for any mistake we may have committed or for any miscommunication from our part. As we said, Casa Mojanda is really not known at all for the kind of management that you imply we have moreover, when precisely during the days of your visit, Casa Mojanda received another award from TripAdvisor as one of the top 1% hotels in Ecuador, for the high quality service and attention that we have always provided during over twenty years. Obviously something did not work with you and we hope to have another opportunity to prove to you the kind of service that we are known for.
Sincerely,
Diego Falconí
General Manager
