This review is based on our stay in mid September 2016, with low prices. In the main season the prices are several times higher (as I saw at the reception) and definitely too high for what they offer. But again: off season a top choice, in my opinion.
Ok, it isn't a luxury stay in one of the old apartments from Yugoslavia, but they are clean, spacious, equipped with nearly everything you need and quite close to the beach. Unfortunately no Wifi there, just in the lobby of Hotel Zagreb, to which those appartments belong to. Check in is also there.
Best discovery was the breakfast, which you can have for extra 60 Kuna in the Hotel Zagreb in the same complex. The buffet was just insanely huge..!

I was there for watching the Major porec volleyball. I was with my friend and boyfriend. The apartman pical was awesome. Two bedrooms. Living room and kitchen. There is a place for 6 people. It is cheap. Great location. Inside is cold. With no bugs. I would go again.

We arrived having made our booking through Booking . Com to find that the apartment was uninhabitible.
The building has not been renovated for about 30 years, and when it was built in the Commi days it must have been fairly basic to start with.
I went to the reception in the Hotel Zagreb to see if we could book into the hotel and pay the difference.
The younge lady who helped us was very polite and super helpful.
She immediately offered us an apartment that had been renovated, number 4H, which we then settled for as it was really ok, as it had a new bathroom, kitchen, fridge, and was repainted with all new beds and bedding.
We had the sense to take our own kettle and coffee making machine as there is nothing supplied with the apartment, except for the kitchen goodies, pots etc and glasses, so you will have to buy serviettes etc at the local supermarket about 1,5 kilometers away.( there is also a great carwash up the same road, hand wash and vacume for about €9,00)
We had a huge sunny terrace with furniture, so breakfasting in the morning sun was great.
Location wise, it cannot be beaten, you are about 75meters from great swimming and sunbathing areas, which are covered in well kept lawns.
The beaches are pebbles so swimming shoes or flip-flops are in order.
Good food and drinks are available all along the front at very reasonable prices.
Porec itself is a wonderful very old town with a lovely harbour and great eating, especially sea food.
Overall, we loved our stay with the exception of the apartments, allbeit ours was ok.

Room Tip: 4H is renovated, don't accept any other apartment, it is a two bedroom apartment.

Ok if you want a post war communist theme park experience, electrics ancient and no RCCD breaker. On info sheet in apartment discovered house rules advise not to use sockets, so can't charge anything or use a kettle that isn't supplied anyway. No we know why. No bath plug supplied as when draining the bath bathroom floods with waste water up the floor drain. De laminated plywood bathroom door evidences years of this happening with no remedy. Full height glass doors fitted with none safety glass wafer thin rattles with car moving in car park, highly dangerous. No dry powder fire extinguisher supplied. No emergency lighting system in event of fire and power cut. No smoke alarm system. Furniture all de laminating with exposed worn away chipboard base that traps dirt. Toilet waste pipe repaired with only what could be described as a plaster of paris bandage, kitchen window hinge broken, loose tiles on roof outside that could slip of and injure/kill someone. Building fabric especially public stairways crumbling and corroded and showing exposed steel reinforcing rods. render loose and falling off.
Made a request for a kettle and a plug at hotel reception, it was logged on hotel computer. No plug came no kettle came, no warning about electrics. They may be polite but whatever training they have been given is to deflect any customer requests and concerns but they do not remedy them. They apparently have been telling people for years that the apartments are going to be upgraded or demolished. The latter would be the best cause of action before someone is seriously hurt.

Room Tip: Don't book any room

Your comments are of tremendous importance to us, because in this way we acquire complete picture of the quality level of our services, and they provide us with objectives and directions towards continual improvements.
We feel sorry we didn’t completely meet your expectations in the matter you comment to us.The truth is that there is a plan of renovating the apartments in a few years from now. Every year, we try to meliorate a part of the apartments with smaller investments but we are fully awared that everything can not be fixed, considering the big picture. We took your comments really seriously and we have added the point into our training-program in order to develop our service quality and courtesy up to your total satisfaction.

We have visited Porec and stayed at the Pical apartments several times since 2008. I agree that the apartments are very dated and in need of modernisation but they are always clean with good quality bedding and towels are changed regularly. They represent excellent value – we paid £370 for 9 nights
The facilities that you can use at the Hotel Zagreb are superb and the staff is excellent. Yes, there is no wifi or a tv but why would you want that when you’ve got a beautiful place like Porec to explore.
Porec offers many places to eat out so we didn’t cook anything in the apartment but we saw several families around us enjoying a meal on their terrace.
The only small area that I feel could be impoved is if they provided a kettle so drinks could be made – also washing up liquid and a teatowel etc.
The apartments are a good base to explore Porec.

Dear DerbyshireMoom,

thank you a lot for taking the time to write a review regarding your stay at Appartments Pical.

We are so glad that you like it so much that you keep coming back over the years.
We are aware of the outdated apartments and that it needs to be renovated. We hope that will happen in a few years ahead.
Regarding the location of the apartments, it is indeed a perfect one to explore Poreč because everything is near - the beach, hotel Valamar Zagreb which offers a lot of activities to spend your time and the beautiful old city of Poreč with it's specialties.
Refering to your comment about the kettle, we will take it under consideration for next year.

We would be happy to welcome you again next summer!

Warm Regards from Poreč,
Valamar Zagreb and Apartments Pical Team
