I spent one night at this hotel with my wife and my daughter. We were given a triple room for 99 US dollars. This is not a high price by international standards and I did not expect much from this hotel. But it surpassed all my expectations.

First, this is a brand new hotel, squeaky clean. The room that we were given was large, very clean, and nicely decorated. So was the bathroom. We got free bottled water (as in other hotels in Myanmar). They also provide flipflops that looked brand new but I could not tell if they were disposable or not.

The hotel is right at the bus station, so if you come by bus there is no need for transportation.

As elsewhere in Myanmar, the service was very polite and efficient. They even offered to "escort" us to the bus station, which is 100 meters away, behind the hotel.

There is a nice hotel pool. It is a bit small, but there were hardly any people around although we spent hours at it, so it is adequate. Very nice tropical vegetation around it, very well maintained. They bring you free towels as soon as you sit on a deckchair by the pool. They also turned on the jacuzzi in the pool just for us.

We had two lunches and one dinner in the restaurant. We were the only customers although the hotel was not empty. Although the restaurant looks upper-end, prices are like in a mall in Yangon: 2.5 - 3.5 EUR for a main dish. They serve free water, which is unusual in Europe. As a person who has been almost everywhere in Southeast Asia, I can tell you that the Asian dishes are perfectly prepared. Whether you will like them or not is a different matter: a matter of taste. I loved them and my daughter was also happy. As my wife does not like Asian food, she ordered pizza. It was a bit weird by Italian (or other European) standards but edible.

The breakfast inlcuded Asian dishes, which I liked a lot, and European stuff, like croissants. The fruits (water melon, melon, papaya) were sweet, which is fairly unusual in Southeast Asia (inluding five-star hotels in Yangon).

There are tuk-tuks waiting right outside the hotel. They charge 7000 kyats (about 4.5 EUR) one way to the temples. It is a good idea to ask the driver to come and pick you up (for the same price) as there is no guarantee that you will find a taxi at the temples. We saw tourists riding motorbikes and bicycles around the temples. You can also rent a horsecart in the temples area. While all these options, including the open tuk-tuk to the temples and then walking around, seemed OK in February, at least in the morning and after 15:00, they may be unacceptable in other periods because of the scorching heat and the rain. You may have to get a regular taxi to get to the temples and drive you around.

One slight inconvenience. The hotel is close to a road with occasional trucks driving by late at night and early in the morning. If you are a light sleeper, that may be a problem. Also, Bagan airport is right next to the hotel. During the day, planes overfly the hotel, right over the pool, at about 50 meters from the ground. As Bagan is a fantastic place, and the Burmese are so nice to tourists, tourism will certainly expand and there will be many more flights to Bagan, including international ones, like to Seam Reap in Cambodia. Unless they move the airport, this hotel will be in big trouble. But for now, it is highly recommendable, unless you insist on nightlife, of which there is none.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the pool might be less noisy.

The Regency is a great Western hotel in Bagan. The breakfast was comprehensive and the cooks made your eggs just the way you want it. It is a newer hotel but is way out of the center of town. It's only 5-10 minutes from the airport. However, they have staff who will take you in a tuk tuk into town and come and get you as well if you give them a specific time. They charged 15,000 Kyats which is well worth it.

Stayed here 3 nights

Hotel rooms are generally ok, breakfast if nice, but:

Location is not good at all, far from cities, noisy from road and bus station, airplanes fly over very close

Room was not very clean

Air from ventilation system sometimes smells like smoke from cigarettes

Personal speaks english very poor

Bar is way overpriced, first time i payed 5000 for a bottle of beer in myanmar
Dont order western style food in restaurant, it is total crap, pizza is uneatable

They rent 5 year old scooters that are more expensive then other places but have poor batteries an non working lightning

Concluding, for this money it is a disgrace

I dont understand the high rating at tripadvisor at all we ledt one day earlier had booked 4 nights

We were not sure where to stay in Bagan so we thought we would chose this hotel and maybe pay a bit less than other expensive alternatives in the area. We love our stay. Great staff, incredibly availablee and attentive. Can't say a single bad word. It is not a 5 star but has a 5 star staff support. The pool was great and open until 10pm for a great evening swim.

We stayed at The Regency Hotel for 3 nights and it was by far the best nights sleep we have had in a long time. My partner and I are full time travellers and Regency was one of the most accommodating hotels we have stayed in. From start to finish, everyday the customer services is 10/10. The buffet breakfast was delicious (I must of had 5 meals each morning). The rooms are large, have a TV a great shower and a super comfortable bed.

An extra bonus, is the hotel is walking distance from the bus station (you pass it as you come into Bagan), so getting to and from the hotel and Bagan is easy.

All in all, highly recommended.

Room Tip: Any of them!
