“An Espresso Oasis”
Review of Pontoon Coffee

Pontoon Coffee
Ranked #1 of 2 Coffee & Tea in Hsipaw

Pontoon is the greatest new addition to Hsipaw. While I'm a huge fan of immersing oneself in cultures that one travels to, I have my weaknesses, and at the top of that list is espresso. After living in Burma for over a year, I visited Pontoon and got the best hit of espresso and muffins I've ever had in the eastern hemisphere. Maureen is the cafe's refreshingly conversive and very informative proprietor. She used to run the Black House Coffee shop, which is now practically defunct due to its current owner's negligence and lack of business acumen. Her new place is lovely as it can be in a beautiful teak house with a pleasant garden out back, a big, shiny new espresso machine and great muffins made by her lovely, local ladies who are sweet and helpful to boot. Do give this place a visit when you're in Hsipaw. It's on Pontoon Street on the right, leaving the main street and walking toward the river, where you can rent a boat for a few hours.

Just like the previous reviewer, we stumbled upon Pontoon by chance. It's a perfect break from the hustle of Hsipaw main street, with a quiet and comfortable courtyard and friendly staff. After travelling through Myanmar/Burma for a few weeks, we were excited to find a place that served coffee made from a espresso machine with real milk. We were equally happy to find that that their toasted sandwiches were made from unsweetened bread! To get there from Mr Charles, take a left onto the main street, then take your first right. It will be on the right-hand side as you walk towards the pontoon. Well worth a visit.

Came across Pontoon Coffee by chance and it was a good find. The coffee is excellent and there are light snacks to be had, I was able to get grilled cheese on toast and took away some chocolate chip muffins to eat later. Maureeen, the owner was very helpful and clearly knowledgeable about the area which was a bonus as we only had a short time to see what needed to be seen.
