We were in Ouro Preto for 2 days and visited the city and the mines the first day and did itacolomi the second. We got a taxi around 10.30 at praça tiradentes and told the driver we wanted to go to pico itacolomi. We agreed on 70 reais (go and picked us back up at 16h at the beginning of the hike). You must be aware that the beginning of the hike is 6 km away from the entrance of the park (=a fazenda close to the hospital were you get dropped off if you take the bus) so tell your taxi driver you want him to drop you off at the beginning of the trail, not just at the entrance of the park. It is 10 reais entrance pp. The hike is 14 km, it took us 2 hours to get up and 1,5 to get down. The first 2 km are on a wide dirt road, at km 2 you need to take a right and from there you walk for 15 min in the forest. Than the more tricky parts starts with the rocks (this is until km 3.5) afterwards again 1,5 km flat. The last 2 km again you go up. At km 6 you already have a great view with rocks. But make sure to go up until km 7! Well worth it!

Average difficulty hiking tour. First 2 km you are going throw forest. After that you start to go up to the peek. It took a little bit more than 4 hours to reach the top and come back to parking lot (In total 13 km). There is other possible hiking routes in the park. Park entrance is 20 minutes from Ouro Preto by car.

An amazing place to walk, in nature. I really appreciate that it is wild with little to know amenities...

This is a beautiful area. We took a taxi from Ouro Preto to the hospital, across the street. We wanted to do some hiking, but we didn't realize that the actual hiking trails started at the visitor center, which was 5.5 Km from were we started. So we walked up (all up) the road to the visitor center, which was deserted. We walked to the restaurant, which was unable to serve us because they were overwhelmed with guests. Fortunately, we had sandwiches with us. Then we walked down, so we got some walking in, but it wasn't quite what we expected. The place is more set up for cars and bikes. But beautiful vegetation.
