Location is perfect and right in Pelhourino historic centre, a few minutes walk to restaurants, live music and bus stops to nearby beaches and other neighbourhoods.
We were in a dorm but got upgraded to a private room at a discount by the owner Diego because the place was quiet. The rooms are basic and not the cleanest but have air-con or a fan. Only two bathrooms in the place so had to wait sometimes.
Staff were really friendly and told us about all the live music going on in town each night. If you want to see music there is something different every night. They also suggested a brilliant free walking tour and offered a taxi service from the airport.
Good but small kitchen and great terrace with hammocks and a pretty nice view. Decent supermarket 5 minutes away. Breakfast was excellent and changed each day - toasties, cake, pancakes, fruit and coffee.
Atmosphere was really sociable with both guests and staff.

Nega Maluca was our first hostel experience in Brazil.
The location is nearby the citycenter of Salvador - Pelourinho.
It was a good host. The boy spoke only Portuguese.
The breakfast was very good. Fruit, bread, cake, suco, café, ...
We could take our breakfast outside what was very nice.
The plumbing was a bummer. The rooms were big but the accomodation wasn't very good.

We spend one night in the hostel.
1. the rooms are damp, even the pillows were smelly
2. quite far from the centre of Pelourinho
3. pay R$3/night more and you can stay in the heart of Pelourinho and enjoy it's nighlife
4. no hot water in the showers.

This place is all about the social atmosphere, not necessarily the facilities. The dorms are perfectly decent. They don't have big lockers for your bag but do have small ones for valuables. The free breakfast is a mixed bag but can be very good if there's pancakes. The location is pretty good, close to shops, restaurants and the centre of town. It's a fair way from the beach but you can get a bus easily enough. The best part of the hostel are the common areas. There are loads of places to sit and chill and you'll always find a spot for yourself. The atmosphere the owner and staff create is very friendly and social, without getting to noisy or wild. The honesty system with beers is also great as it means you can just pay for everything at the end. All in all, it's a very good backpackers hostel.

Nega maluca is a better option for travelers who want to be close to music venues and historic places in the pelourinho without the noise and grunginess of the pelourinho. The terrace is great for chilling out with other guests, the staff or the hostel's cat and dog. There's a great little market around the corner. You can catch a bus by walking 5 min to estação Aquidabã, which connects you to the rest of Salvador and the Rodoviaria. Stay there and you'll meet great people.

Room tip: Pick a room or dorm with a window
