We began our trip with a visit to Kamakura. This proved to be an excellent decision, away from the madding crowds in Tokyo. Kamakura is very easy to reach from Haneda. Station staff at the airport were extremely helpful. Kakiya Ryokan is halfway between Kamakura and Fujisawa on the quaint electric local train. The ryokan is only a few minutes walk along the main street/ train tracks. When you leave the station, turn sharp left and then turn right. You'll then be on the main street/ train tracks. We arrived very early as our plane landed at 5am but we greeted very warmly at the restaurant which is across the road from the ryokan. My suggestion is to take the half board option. Heavily influenced by local fish, the food is plentiful and delicious. The couple who run the restaurant are very warm and friendly. The ryokan itself is clean as a whistle but very basic. The shared bathroom is able to be booked so you actually have it to yourself. Value for money it can't be beaten, A$100 for half board pp per day.
As for exploring Kamakura it was perfect. We walked to Enoshima. Don't miss the lookout at the top and the view of Mt Fuji. We used day tickets ( 600 yen) to ride up and down the Enoden line. Kamakura is a delightful spot with a beautiful temple complex. Even with crowds it is very manageable as the Japanese are so polite!

Kakiya Ryokan is a pleasant, comfortable ryokan that's near Koshigoe Station in Kamakura. My friend and I stayed their together and really enjoyed it! It was nice and relaxing to soak in the big bath after a long day of hiking and sightseeing; shampoo and body soap were supplied, as were once face towel, one body towel, and one yukata robe per person. The room itself was simple, with a small television, table, water heater (and tea), and one futon per person. It's perfect, assuming that you're planning on spending most of your time out and about the city and only need a place to wind down at the end of the day. The wifi connection was adequate for basic usage, and the staff were friendly, helpful, and readily available. Though the walls are a bit thin and voices from others guests occasionally carried into our room, it wasn't a big deal. Overall, we had a wonderful time and would definitely stay their again in the future.

This place does not live up to expectations and is definitely too expensive for what it has to offer. Personnel is friendly. The room on the street side is noisy with the tram and traffic. The attached bathroom is small and smelly. The sheets and pillows have been on duty for a long time. The room does not have a fridge. There's a shared one on the floor. I'm OK with that but not for the price I'm paying. The supermarket accross the street is convenient. We did not try the restaurant for breakfast. You can hear the neighbours talk.

It was a very comfortable stay in this ryokan during the late winter season. I was able to experience the traditional "washitsu" room, with heater, extremely comfortable futon(for winter) & yukata(bathrobe) was provided. I was given a room facing a backyard garden of someone's house. So in the morning I can open the windows & have some fresh air to the room. No loud noise throughout my stay. There's only 1 medium sized public bath "ofuro" room which was slightly spacious & clean, it is first come first use basis and advised to lock it since it's not a shared bathroom.

The location was perfect. The retro train will pass by along the street of this ryokan, could take countless photo & video with ease. walking distance about 5-15 min to the unique Enoshima train station, beach, island & Kamakura high school station. Few stations away to the Giant Buddha. Few restaurant chains along the main road. The price of room included with a generous healthy Japanese breakfast set. The restaurant is located just opposite the ryokan. After dinner I was able to walk to the island smoothly even after dark, the walkways were always lit up. There's isn't much to see at night. I managed to eat the raw "shirasu" before I left. Everything was perfect for the ryokan. But during the cloudy & rainy days you might not be able to see the magnificent Mount Fuji from Enoshima. I didn't manage to try the local food along the walking street in Enoshima since I was either too early/late when I reached the island. There's nothing unpleasant throughout the stay, probably I was able to speak Japanese to the staff directly. There's actually only 1 part-time staff in the ryokan each time, which handles your check-in & housekeeping the next day. The last day was another staff. There's nobody at the counter at night but it is safe coz there's security camera at lobby. Buy the retro train 1 day pass & you're ready to explore anywhere within the lovely Shonan area.
