We chose to walk on our own so we could go into each of the historic buildings, museums and parks along our route. If you take the tour it just walks by all the significant places. We spent the whole afternoon walking along the AAA book's Historic Walk which was more thorough than the Alexandria Visitor Book self guided walking tour. At the end of our route we enjoyed the art in the Torpedo Factory and then sat along the Potomac River Boat Dock.

The Alexandria Visitors Center is small and compact but they are extremely hospitable, they put the Best Foot Forward representing all of the many, many fun things for people to do in this charming, delightful Gem-across-the-Potomac destination. Millions of visitors see the top sights in Washington DC each year and most of them miss the fabulous offerings in Alexandria. Restaurants of the very best caliber are available to compete with everything DC can offer. History, music, entertainment and the my personal favorite The Potomac Riverboat company, are all made completely accessible to you in the Visitors Center.

The day we stopped by here the center was staffed by some very helpful women. They answered questions and gave us hints on little, out of the way things to see and notice as we walked around Old Town. There are plenty of brochures and souvenirs here also.

Small Visitors Center that isn't very handicap friendly as it has lots of stairs to climb. Located in a 1950's recreation of Ramsay's house, it offers information on the area and a few items to purchase.
