We have been coming to the Torpedo Factory for many years. It is a must do when we visit Old town Alexandria. The artists are always welcoming and ready to share their craft.

If you are in the historic Old Town there are some interesting places to visit. One is the Torpedo Factory Art Center right on the Boardwalk overlooking the famous Patomic River. This was an old factory building where they built torpedos for the war back in the day. It was beautifully converted into a huge 3 story Art Center where the artists have to be accepted for a program to have a studio to work in for a specific period of time. The place is filled with top-notch artists, galleries, and studios where you can actually talk with the artists about their art and see their work. A great concept. Most of the work is for sale. There is also a little restaurant on the first floor along with a shop to buy souvenirs. I was especially impressed with the pottery of JOAN ULRICH CERAMICS. Another very interesting studio is PRINTMAKERS INC on the 3rd floor where master printmaker Edward McCluney has a huge selection of etchings, woodcuts, screenprints, lithographs and more. Mr. McCluney was present and nice enough to take his time to explain many of the different works and their process. As an extra bonus, this studio has the best view of the river in the building. Congratulations to the staff and owners for putting together this building and program. It adds a lot to the area and Old Town.

We spent 4 hours doing the historical walking tour of Old Town Alexandria beginning at the Tourist Center on King Street so we ended up at the Torpedo Factory having time to enjoy the various studios of art before they closed. A variety of media are included in this 3 story warehouse. You'll get to talk to some of the artists and even watch some as they create. I had a lovely visit with one of the watercolor painters as she worked. Then as you leave enjoy as stroll along the Potomac in the lovely part just north of the nearby collection of riverside restaurants by the boat dock. Great area for people watching or dinner.

Many artist studios with the artist often actually working there. At the foot of King Street with Starbucks right across the street and many restaurants very close by.

Right on the waterfront. You can watch the artist during their crafts. There are three floors of full of studios. They are very friendly and the goods are ready for sale. Very unique items. I understand it was once an actual naval munitions factory. A must see. You can visit for a few minutes to probably a few hours. There is also cafe on site.
