We stayed for 3 nights in February while visiting our daughter. The Driskill's location put us in the heart of the action. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. The food was good and we enjoyed the bar.

I was very excited to stay at this hotel and had even received a friends and family discount making the stay even more exciting. Upon entering the hotel there was an overwhelming sewage smell and housekeepers walking around with air freshener. Something I would not expect for a hotel like this. I had only once visited this hotel once before and it was on a previous stay to Austin last October. I simply walked through the lobby and looked around the bar area and knew right away I wanted to stay there sometime. The smell in the lobby sort of ruined the initial arrival. Aside from the smell there was nothing really wrong with the hotel. The room was on the small size but otherwise very nice. I ask for a room with a nice view and was told that wouldn't be possible so I overlooked a roof of an adjacent building, no big deal as someone who has worked in the hotel industry, I know not all requests can be met. The bar area is very nice and I would certainly go back and enjoy it during happy hour but I don't think I would stay at this hotel again overnight. It is in a great location but there are other hotels that are far better values that are close by as well.

Room Tip: Not sure because I requested a room with a nice view but ended up with a terrible one

My room was lovely, and the bed was very comfortable but to use a chair at the desk, I had to drag one from about 10 feet away as to have left one there would have meant that I couldn't use the door to the room. Internet worked flawlessly. The room was small, which I actually liked, and dark, which I did not. The lobby and next half level up smelled of sewage, and we had two nights when the power was switched off for a while. Management had anticipated this and advised guests and given everyone glow-sticks, but the sound of everything starting up again would have challenged even a champion sleeper! The staff was all very nice and helpful although we had some excruciatingly slow service to a conference room from the room-service menu which had even the most even-keeled of our group on the verge of meltdowns. The gym facilities were okay but there was some jockeying over the limited equipment. The fancier restaurant in the hotel (near the bar) had very nice food with particularly innovative presentation. As a fan of older hotels, I give this one a thumbs up -- it takes a lot to keep this kind of facility functional and elegant, and I may have just been unlucky to have been there when so much of that upkeep seemed to have been underway...

My youngest son was married February 4, 2012, in Austin, Texas. The wedding host hotel was The Driskill, and the reception was held there. The hotel is located in downtown Austin on Sixth Street and Brazos very near to the center of the Austin nightlife, the live music capital of the world, the state capitol, museums, St. Mary's Cathedral, and other attractions. The reception was very, very nice on the Mezzanine with one huge room and several smaller rooms off the large room. There were at least 300 people at the reception, and it was not crowded. The food and service were superb. The dance floor was small but adequate. This is an historic, luxury hotel with some very fancy special rooms. The other rooms are small because it is an old hotel, but the bathrooms are very clean and modern. Everything is maintained in excellent condition, although the rooms are dark. The decor, historic atmosphere, luxurious setting, and service are outstanding. Even with the wedding discount package the rooms are high priced. For us, this was a special, one-time occasion that was worth the price.
