As the crowd gathers daily on the east side of the Congress Bridge and wait patiently until dusk we had to see what it was all about. Although over much faster than the long wait, once the bats make a move from their daytime rest under the bridge it certainly is quite a sight. To see thousands of bats pour out from underneath in a long funnel of black specks disappearing into the night is not something anyone would see in many other places in the world.

We were here for a weeks visit and could not miss out on the bat thing! It was actually really cool and the kids thought so too, even though they had a hard time understanding what the wait was all about. We came at 19:15-ish and had to wait for about 20 min before anything started to happen. We were all fascinated by the numbers of bats and how the 'flow' of bats just never seemed to end!

Depending on the season, there will be throngs of tourist to see the bats. So you may want to go early just to grab a better viewing spot. We went to see the famed bats of Congress Avenue Bridge during fall. We chose to stand near the underside of bridge because of the proximity. But because of the early sunsets the bats were tad hard to see against the fast fading light. Don't get me wrong, it is hard to miss them once they start taking flight. But none of our snaps match the pictures of bats against the brilliant orange backdrop. So I would recommend summer evenings for bat viewing. Being on the bridge may also allow you a better vantage point in terms of taking pictures. Again, I can't stress this enough - go to the bridge (under/over) early enough to grab the best viewing spot and you may have to pay for parking depending on the parking lot you find place to park.

Watching the bats as the sun goes down is very exciting and educational if you take a ride on one of the tour boats.

We were there on Monday March 26. The bats came out later than expected - 8:10pm - and it was nearly dark. There were less than we expected but it was still fun to see a big "clump" come out at once. I'm glad we hadn't rented a boat as we would never have been able to return it in time.
