I recommend you become a member. The membership can be used at the aquarium and other zoos around the country as well.
Absolutely stunning natural habitat zoo. Lots and lots of lots of walking though. They do have a tram but it only stops at two different locations throughout the zoo. There is a neat little playground area for the kids. They have a beautiful lake, swamp area, African safari area, mountainous area, polar bears and sea lions... just about every type of animal. Lions and elephants and buffalo and elk, monkeys, alligators, snapping turtle... definitely worth the trip! They also had a nice area to eat at that included a merry-go-round and African wind machine. And of course you can purchase food and trinkets at the gift shop.
I love visiting the NC Zoo. Our zoo is ranked in the top 10 and it should be. My advice is to break your visit into 2 days. North America one day and Africa the next day. The tram is great and saves you from much walking,
We were a group of 8, perfect day, perfect weather, perfect place. We didn't have to rush, enjoyed our time there, lots of things to see, Everyone has a special animal they spent time viewing. Not overly expensive. We did bring a lunch to eat in a nearby park, not only to save money, but some had dietary issues or were picky eaters. Have been back since with a smaller group, but it is a special place for a family outing.
Fewer crowds after Christmas made for visit to North America section of park a delight. Despite limited food and concessions, the service and quality was not diminished. We grabbed some freshly made sandwiches immediately after entering park and enjoyed them at the well designed and placed picnic/playground. Nearby Polar bear, seals and puffins were all a treat and excited my 3-year old.
The Black Bears and Grizzly were all worth the gradual climb uphill past the nicely landscaped indigenous forest.
We saved the Africa Region for another visit in the spring which is certain after our successful and satisfying first time family visit this Christmas holiday.
We decided two days after Christmas to take a day trip to the zoo. We live about 2 hours away and it was well worth the $15.00 a person (adult) to get in. We walked a lot but the tram is available to get to some areas.
