It was hot. Motorcycles were whizzing by, some almost riding over my feet as I tentatively stepped off the curb. I'd visited the vegetable and the fish markets, strolled by the mosque, and felt that I'd seen enough of Malé. So before taking the ferry back to Hulhumale, where I was staying, I was searching for a place that was cool and had a clean ladies' room. I asked a passerby and she immediately suggested Café Ier, just a few minutes away from the old Muslim cemetery.
What a lovely surprise! Not only was there air-conditioning, a spotless restroom, and plenty of tables, but also a very tempting display of homemade ice cream. I learned later that the flavours change every day and they are real Italian recipes. You get a generous portion in a bowl for just a few dollars and during my short stay in Malé I tried several of the flavors. My favorites were the New York Cheesecake and the Blueberry.
Café Ier offers every type of Italian coffees, expressos, cappuccinos, and lattes you could wish for, both hot and cold, as well as an interesting selection of tea and ice tea, milkshakes, and fresh fruit juice. I really recommend taking a break in this conveniently-located café to relax and enjoy some refreshments.
