A loss to K.L

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Apr 2015
I read the reviews here regarding The Heritage Station Hotel and feel that I must speak up and defend the old girl, who is sadly no longer with us.
The Heritage was in its day a grand decadent symbol of colonial rule, think Titanic on her maiden voyage or Claridges today just far larger.
In the early 1930’s The Heritage was the beating heart of Kuala Lumpur from the sweeping staircases which incidentally ran on both sides of the lift not just the left one as it is today to the fabulous hand carved locally made wooden panelling and the imposing portraits of by now long dead rulers and heads of state.
After Colonial rule ended it passed through the hands of a number of owners some wealthy some not so and that is when the problems really began.
I lived in The Heritage for over a year and have some of the most amazing and truly beautiful (Not to mention painful) memories of my life there. From falling instantly in love over breakfast one December Morning (not a joke) Aton was one of the most incredible women I ever met, to sitting on the window ledge of the upper bar an ice cooled glass of Jack Daniels and coke in my hand while overlooking the grand, beautiful and truly unique architecture the railway ministers offices, design that is still so prevalent in Kuala Lumpur today.
I often wondered through the heart of the old lady at 3 and 4 in the morning a glass of Jack Daniels in my hand or sat downstairs with the staff who became true friends eating, drinking and playing guitar till the early hours. As I write this I realise this may come off as the ramblings of an Alcoholic believe me I’m not. Well I guess it depends on who you ask ;-)
For those like me who remember Rose, Annie, Steve, P.K and the nymphomaniac Anna
(Believe me she was I can vouch for that god wasn’t she just) 2005 to 2007 were in this humble writers opinion her best years. In 2007 she was sold to a Singaporean Consortium and finally she lost her long hard fought battle for someone to love her and care for her as much as I still do. You have to understand that she was old and took a tremendous amount of upkeep over a million pounds (yes pounds) a year to keep her running.
As a residential hotel there was no way someone could have made enough just to cover her overheads let alone a full restoration which to be fare is what anyone would need after being around some 125 years. The Heritage was and still is one of the greatest Architectural Gems that Malaysia can offer.
In 2008 the new owner came in and stripped away the little dignity she had left. They pulled the plug on all the show cases that adorned the walls of the dining room. The handmade gifts and crafts created by the staff and locals alike were ripped out, 125 year old bar signs were mercilessly thrown away; as centuries old stain glass was replaced with a cheap plastic modern alternative in a vicious effort to liven the place up. All it succeeded in doing was condemning her soul further.
As of December 2011 The Heritage is no longer. Briefly reopening again in 2014 she is again closed. At the time of writing this review and I suspect forever although I hope I am wrong. On my recent visit there I stopped by to see the old girl, to walk her incredibly hot creaky corridors to smile as flakes of paint fell into my hair, to just once more breath in the must laden air to listen to the souls of all who once strolled her formerly opulent corridors and dined in her open aired upper floor restaurant, waiters dressed as penguins in stifling heat serving chilled drinks and decadent food to the upper echelons’ of Malaysian society.
It saddens me that people are so quick to judge in this world of perfectly cold A/C iPods, Smart phones digital cameras and MTV rather than to take the time to appreciate that yes she wasn’t perfect as she aged but who is or will be? Yes she was run down, (Not her fault) but those who berate this once spectacular BEAUTIFUL hotel ran by incredible people don’t look further than their noses. These so called modern hotels are not a patch on the Heritage it saddens me even further that a once Titanic building has succumbed to such a tragic fate.
If you are ever in K.L take the time to visit she is close to the National Mosque (Which incidentally) plays the most spectacular Addan’s that you will ever hear.) If you love old world architecture or just simply want to see something that you will sadly never see again in this fast moving modern world, then stop by break in (easy to do) and take a tour. You should appreciate her true beauty before she is lost forever pulled down and turned into a Shopping Mall or flat pack housing.
The Heritage Station Hotel may you R.I.P...

This place is in dire need of a makeover. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. The carpets are old, dingy and smell. The rooms are not clean with garbage from previous guest in the room. The guy at reception has no service attributes whatsoever. The washroom was also dirty and no hot water The price is cheap but better to find another place.

A good hotel is never good enough but a bad hotel is a joy forever. (Our family motto.)

Well, everything on this site written about musty carpets, sagging mattresses, and gloomy halls is true, except, if you love trains, the joy of this hotel is that from some rooms (not sure which, but mine) you listen to the sounds of trains in the station all night long. I know, an acquired taste, but maybe for some of you the stuff of dreams.

Someday, a swanky hotel group will snap up this hotel, turn it into a palace on (above?) train wheels, and the rates will go from $50 to $350 a night. In the meantime, the hotel is perfect for coming and going on local trains, which I found delightful. Langkawai, Penang, Singapore: all easy train rides from KL.

Guys, your wives or girlfriends will not thank you for a night in this hotel, but for those who love the sound of engines shunting in the night, here's your hotel.

We arrived early morning and were greeted by LURCH. No smile, little customer service. We were shown our room via a 100 old creepy lift which barely made it 2 floors up. Down a long decrepit coridoor into our room. It was a triple room but by no means large. The carpets were musty smelling and dirty. Chairs and table run down and broken. No toilet paper. When we asked them for some we got a rude reply that we should have looked in the cupboard. Didn't tell them we didn't dare open the cupboard for fear we'll find something out of a horror movie inside it. The room was so dark and everything in it was dirty and disgusting. The bathroom was shocking!! Dirty, leftover hair from previous stays and no hot water. Most horrendous hotel I've ever stayed in my life!! Disgusting and spoilt my entire holiday!!

Booked this from UK and had read the reviews but wasn't prepared for the reality.
As we walked in the smell of decay/ rot hit us. The cafeteria next to reception was gloomy and looked grubby.
We asked to have a look at the room and went up in the little lift which was quaint and worked fine. You could see beams with dry rot as you went up. We got to our floor but had to negotiate a short flight of stairs to get to our floor. Up to a lovely wide light , airy corridor but with threadbare dirty carpet.
Room 3329 was large with a dressing area and neat and tidy but so gloomy as there was only one small window with opaque glass (obviously overlooking the station platform). The smell of decay/chemicals was nearly overpowering so we didn't stay.
It's such a shame as I'm sure that this could be a fabulous hotel and the staff that we met were lovely. I think that it needs a serious amount of money spending on it to make it habitable.

This is the coolest hotel I've ever stayed in! A standard single was in fact a suite/2 room apartment. The building is enormous and very, very historical.
Pros: Enormous room with 2(!) air conditions. No timer, so the room remained at set temp all day. Good service, good breakfast, free Wi-Fi downstairs. Excellent location and quiet at night. Had a really good sleep!
Cons: No non-smoking rooms, wear-and-tear everywhere, not the cleanest place, no hot water in showers (which did not matter at all, probably 40 degrees "cold" water), rack rates over-priced, no air-con in common areas.
If you want your room spotless, don´t stay here, but if you instead of zooming in on the stained wallpaper and send the photos here, just ignore them, you'll have a great stay! For eating out, go to the local diner next door, sooo good Malaysian food and very cheap.
